Description

The 2020 Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the most coveted parcels on the Côte d’Or. Sourced from the tiny, 8-hectare Montrachet vineyard straddling Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, this is a profound, ageworthy Chardonnay that marries power with remarkable precision. As a Grand Cru bottling from Louis Jadot’s flagship holdings, it represents the pinnacle of the domaine’s white wine portfolio and a reference point for great Burgundy worldwide.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru is luminous and concentrated, showing a deep straw to pale gold hue that hints at both richness and youth. The nose is immediately complex and expressive, bursting with ripe white peach and pear layered with orange zest, acacia honey, beeswax, and warm brioche, all underpinned by subtle herbal nuances and a refined touch of struck match and toasted oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied and enveloping, yet finely structured, with a creamy, layered mid-palate and a spine of vibrant, spicy acidity that keeps everything in perfect balance. Flavors echo the aromas—stone fruit, citrus oil, and orchard fruit—joined by notes of roasted hazelnut, wet stone, and a distinctly saline, mineral drive that carries through to an expansive, persistent finish. The concentration and structure of the 2020 vintage give this wine excellent aging potential; while already impressive in its youth, it will gain further complexity, depth, and tertiary nuances (truffle, dried honey, toasted nuts) over 10–20+ years in a proper cellar.

Production
Montrachet Grand Cru sits on the mid-slope of the Côte d’Or, where thin, limestone-rich soils over marl, excellent drainage, and a sun-drenched, southeast-facing exposure deliver grapes of remarkable ripeness and intensity without sacrificing freshness. The vine holdings are farmed with meticulous attention, with low yields and careful canopy management to ensure optimal maturity. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to retain only perfectly healthy, concentrated Chardonnay berries. In the winery, Louis Jadot follows a classic, Burgundian approach: gentle pressing, fermentation in oak (including a proportion of new French barrels), followed by extended maturation on fine lees. This slow élevage enhances texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s vibrant acidity and the unmistakable mineral expression of Montrachet.

Food & Serving
This is a grand, gastronomic white that shines alongside the finest dishes from the sea and the land. Ideal pairings include butter-poached lobster, scallops in a delicate cream or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole with beurre noisette, roasted Bresse chicken with morels, or rich dishes featuring truffle and porcini. Aged Comté or nutty, high-quality hard cheeses can also be sublime companions. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl; for young vintages like 2020, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to help the wine open up and reveal its full complexity.
