Description
The 2020 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most historic hilltops. Sourced from the legendary Corton-Charlemagne slopes in the Côte de Beaune, this wine marries power, precision and age-worthy structure in a way only great Grand Cru Chardonnay can. The warm, generous 2020 vintage adds an extra layer of concentration while preserving the mineral drive that has made this appellation famous for centuries.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Corton-Charlemagne shows a luminous pale gold color with green-tinged reflections, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is complex and slowly unfurls with notes of ripe citrus (lemon curd, grapefruit zest), white peach and pear, layered with hints of acacia blossom, almond, toasted brioche and a distinct chalky, stony minerality.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet finely etched Grand Cru, combining richness and tension. Flavors of citrus oil, juicy stone fruit and baked apple are intertwined with nuances of hazelnut, buttered pastry, wet stone and a subtle smoky, flinty edge from the terroir and barrel aging. The acidity is vibrant and linear, giving the wine great length and precision, while the texture is creamy but never heavy. Still youthful, it already offers impressive depth but will gain further complexity over the next decade or more. With proper cellaring, this 2020 Corton-Charlemagne should comfortably evolve and drink beautifully for 10–15 years, and potentially longer in ideal conditions.
Production
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru sits high on the Corton hill in the northern Côte de Beaune, on steep, well-exposed slopes of predominantly limestone and marl soils that are ideal for Chardonnay. The vineyards benefit from a cooler, breezy microclimate, which preserves acidity and aromatic finesse even in warmer vintages like 2020. Louis Jadot sources fruit from prime parcels across the slope, with careful vineyard management and predominantly manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. The wine is traditionally vinified: gentle pressing of whole clusters, followed by fermentation in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new to add complexity without overwhelming the terroir character. It then matures on fine lees for an extended period (typically around 15–18 months), with bâtonnage as appropriate, building texture and depth while maintaining tension and clarity.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Chardonnay is a natural partner for refined cuisine. It shines alongside rich seafood dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops, turbot, sole meunière or roasted monkfish, and pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal in cream sauce, or delicate dishes featuring morels and other wild mushrooms. It also complements aged Comté, Beaufort and other firm, nutty cheeses. Serve slightly chilled at around 11–13°C (52–55°F) to allow the aromas and texture to fully express themselves. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to open up the bouquet; older, more evolved bottles should be handled more gently and may be best served without extended decanting, after a careful double-check for sediment.
