Description

The 2020 Louis Jadot Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ most storied vineyards. Sitting stylistically between the power of Gevrey-Chambertin and the silkiness of Chambolle-Musigny, this Grand Cru marries depth and structure with haunting finesse. From an outstanding vintage and a hallowed terroir first cultivated in the Middle Ages, it is one of the most compelling wines in Jadot’s 2020 cellar lineup.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru shows a luminous, deep ruby hue with youthful purple highlights that signal both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with pure red berry aromatics—wild strawberry, morello cherry and redcurrant—interwoven with rose petals, hints of peony, exotic spice, vanilla pod and a subtle dusting of raw cocoa and fine earth. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet superbly poised, with a core of vibrant, juicy red fruit wrapped in velvety, finely grained tannins. Layers of raspberry, cherry and cranberry unfurl alongside notes of sandalwood, star anise, cocoa nib and a whisper of forest floor, giving both immediate charm and serious complexity. The acidity is lively and precise, extending into a long, graceful finish with lingering spice and floral tones. Built for the long haul, this 2020 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru will reward patience, evolving beautifully over 15–25 years from vintage, and offering peak drinking from roughly 2028 onward.

Production
Clos Saint-Denis is one of the great Grand Cru vineyards of Morey-Saint-Denis, with a south-east exposure that captures the morning light and protects the vines from excessive afternoon heat. The soils are a classic Côte de Nuits mix of limestone and clay, enriched with iron and marl, providing both structure and minerality to Pinot Noir. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with a mix of whole clusters and destemmed fruit depending on vintage character, followed by aging in French oak barrels—of which a significant portion are new—to add subtle spice and texture without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the distinctive Clos Saint-Denis terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru red Burgundy shines alongside refined yet flavorful dishes: roast salmon or richer fish preparations, roasted or grilled chicken, and a wide range of red meats such as grilled beef, lamb chops, Osso Buco, hearty stews, ragout and classic Boeuf Bourguignon. Game birds—duck, partridge, quail—and venison or young wild boar also make superb partners, as do buttery mashed potatoes and Burgundian cheeses like Cîteaux and Mont d’Or. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F). In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold; with age, a gentle splash decant just before serving is sufficient to remove sediment and open the wine.

Producer
Maison Louis Jadot, founded in 1859, is one of Burgundy’s most respected and widely recognized producers, with a deep presence across the region’s most important appellations. Through its Domaine holdings (including Domaine Gagey) and long-standing grower relationships, Jadot has been instrumental in showcasing the classical character of each village and Grand Cru, from Chablis down to the Mâconnais. In the Côte de Nuits, the house is especially esteemed for its work in Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, consistently producing wines that balance typicity, elegance and age-worthiness. Over decades, Louis Jadot has earned a reputation with collectors and sommeliers worldwide as a benchmark for serious, terroir-driven Burgundy that remains faithful to its origins.
