Description

The 2020 Louis Jadot Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of the region’s most storied vineyards. Sourced from the legendary Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine marries intensity and precision with the silken texture that defines great Pinot Noir. In the warm, generous 2020 vintage, Jadot has crafted a Clos de Bèze of both power and remarkable refinement. Chambertin Clos de Bèze is one of Burgundy’s true crown jewels, with a history dating back to the 7th century when the land was first entrusted to the Abbey of Bèze. Today, its 15 hectares of limestone-rich slopes are considered among the finest terroirs on earth for Pinot Noir, producing wines that rival Chambertin itself, yet are often described as slightly more elegant, aromatic and filigreed in structure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Louis Jadot Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with youthful purple reflections, indicating both concentration and energy. The nose is complex and many-layered, with vivid notes of black cherry, wild raspberry and redcurrant intertwined with hints of rose petal, subtle spice and a distinctive mineral imprint that recalls a cool marine or estuarine breeze. As it opens, nuances of forest floor, fine tea, graphite and a whisper of oak-derived vanilla and toast emerge, adding further depth and dimension. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet impeccably poised, with juicy red and dark berry fruit supported by fine, vibrant acidity. The structure is tightly knit but refined, framed by ultra-fine, chalky tannins that give the wine its notable tension and length. Flavors of ripe cherry, cranberry, and blackberry are layered with savory notes of spice, earth and stone, leading into a long, harmonious, silk-smooth finish. While already impressively complete in its youth, this Clos de Bèze clearly has the backbone and balance to age beautifully for 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring, gaining in complexity, truffle notes and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Chambertin Clos de Bèze sits on a perfectly exposed mid-slope in the northern Côte de Nuits, just above Gevrey-Chambertin, where shallow, limestone-rich soils with marl and clay provide superb drainage and naturally low yields for Pinot Noir. The terroir’s mix of rocky subsoil and ideal slope orientation creates a cool yet well-ventilated microclimate, allowing optimal ripening while preserving freshness and aromatic detail. Louis Jadot selects grapes from prime parcels within the Grand Cru, harvested by hand at optimal maturity with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and winery. Vinification is traditionally Burgundian, with careful destemming (often partial), cold maceration, and fermentation in open wooden vats using indigenous yeasts to gently extract color, aroma and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, for around 18 months, allowing the élevage to polish the tannins and integrate the oak without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of Clos de Bèze’s noble terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru deserves equally refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck with cherry or plum, pigeon or squab, veal with morel mushrooms, lamb saddle, or delicately prepared game birds. It also shines alongside refined mushroom dishes, truffle risotto, or mature but not overly strong cheeses like Comté, aged Tomme or mild washed-rind cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its many layers; as it matures, a more gentle, shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will suffice.

Producer
Founded in 1859, Maison Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s most respected and widely recognized producers, renowned for its deep holdings in many of the region’s greatest appellations. Over the decades, Jadot has built an extensive mosaic of vineyards from Chablis to Beaujolais, with a particularly strong presence in the Côte d’Or’s top Premier and Grand Cru sites. The house has long championed a terroir-driven philosophy, vinifying and bottling each parcel separately to preserve its distinct character. In Gevrey-Chambertin and especially in Grand Cru climats like Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Louis Jadot has played a key role in showcasing the profound potential of Pinot Noir from these historic slopes. Consistently praised by critics and collectors alike, Jadot’s wines are considered benchmarks for their balance, authenticity and capacity to age, making them a cornerstone of serious Burgundy cellars worldwide.
