Description
The 2020 L’Hêtre Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is a refined Right Bank red that showcases the elegance and depth this overlooked appellation can deliver. Crafted with a focus on precision and freshness, it offers a modern, polished expression of Bordeaux that remains true to its classic roots. This cuvée stands out for its connection to some of the region’s most respected winemaking talent, bringing Grand Vin ambition to the hillsides of Castillon.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 L’Hêtre displays a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple highlights, signaling both youth and intensity. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of ripe black cherries, plums, and blackcurrants, intertwined with notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and a touch of warm spices from élevage in oak.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied red with supple, finely grained tannins and a core of juicy dark fruit. Flavors of blackberry, cassis, and red plum are lifted by hints of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and a subtle mineral edge that reflects its limestone terroir. The wine is well-balanced, with fresh acidity giving energy and length to the finish. Enjoyable now with a short decant to soften the structure, it also has the potential to evolve gracefully for 7–10 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture with time in bottle.
Production
L’Hêtre is sourced from the limestone and clay-limestone slopes of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, an area that extends the geological profile of Saint-Émilion to slightly higher elevations. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and often a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, with careful vineyard work to limit yields and ensure optimal ripeness. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at perfect maturity, typically by hand, to preserve berry integrity. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to emphasize purity of fruit over heaviness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new) for added structure, aromatic complexity, and finesse, before bottling at the estate.
Food & Serving
The 2020 L’Hêtre pairs beautifully with classic bistro and brasserie fare—think roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, or slow-braised beef. It also complements earthy dishes such as mushroom ragout, lentil stews, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). A decant of 45–60 minutes before serving will help the wine open up its aromatics and soften the youthful tannins, especially in the first few years after release.
Producer
L’Hêtre is a relatively young but highly regarded estate in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, created with the ambition of showcasing the untapped potential of this limestone-rich appellation. Benefiting from the expertise of top Right Bank winemaking talent, the property applies meticulous vineyard management and thoughtful, quality-focused winemaking usually associated with more famous neighbors like Saint-Émilion. In a short time, L’Hêtre has helped elevate the reputation of Castillon wines, earning attention from critics and collectors for its precision, purity of fruit, and outstanding value in the context of modern Bordeaux.
