Description

The 2020 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso Magnum is a striking expression of Bolgheri’s coastal terroir, crafted entirely from Cabernet Franc and presented in a majestic large format. In magnum, this iconic Tuscan red gains an extra dimension of finesse and longevity, making it ideal for collectors or for the centre of the table on special occasions. Since its debut in the late 1980s, Paleo Rosso has helped redefine the reputation of Bolgheri, showing that Cabernet Franc can deliver profound elegance, complexity and age-worthiness in this corner of Italy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Paleo Rosso shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with youthful purple highlights clinging to the rim. The nose is intensely perfumed yet refined, offering layers of blackcurrant, blueberry and wild blackberry interwoven with graphite, pencil shavings, violets and Mediterranean herbs. Subtle notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, cocoa and sweet spice unfold with air, underlining the wine’s precision and complexity. On the palate, this is focused and pure, with a silky yet firm tannic structure and a vivid line of acidity that carries the dark fruit through a very long finish. Flavours of black fruit and black cherry are lifted by hints of crushed mint, sage, liquorice and a touch of smoky minerality. The 2020 vintage combines ripeness and freshness, making the wine approachable in its youth but clearly built to evolve. In magnum format, its aging potential is extended significantly; stored well, it should comfortably develop and gain tertiary nuances—truffle, leather, dried flowers—over 15–20+ years.

Production
Le Macchiole’s vineyards lie on the coastal plain of Bolgheri, where maritime breezes, abundant sunshine and well-drained, mixed soils of sand, clay and pebbles come together to favour slow, even ripening of Cabernet Franc. The estate is farmed organically, with careful canopy management and strict green harvesting to control yields and concentrate flavour. Grapes for Paleo Rosso are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, then sorted meticulously to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless-steel tanks, with gentle extraction to preserve the grape’s aromatic purity and fine tannins. The wine is then aged for around 18 months in French oak barriques (a high proportion new), allowing it to gain texture and complexity without overwhelming the character of the fruit or the signature Bolgheri minerality.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Paleo Rosso Magnum is a natural partner for refined meat dishes—think grilled or roasted lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or braised short ribs with herbs and root vegetables. It also works beautifully with game birds, truffle dishes, mushroom ragùs, and well-aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); for a magnum, plan a bit more time for the wine to open up. Decanting 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics and structure to fully express themselves.

Producer
Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole is one of the pioneering estates of Bolgheri and a key architect of the region’s rise to international prominence. Located along Tuscany’s Tyrrhenian coast, the winery gained renown for its focused, single-varietal interpretations of international grapes, with Paleo Rosso standing out as one of Italy’s benchmark Cabernet Francs. Today, under the stewardship of Cinzia Merli and her team, Le Macchiole continues to champion low-intervention, organic viticulture and meticulous, small-lot winemaking. The estate’s wines regularly receive top scores from leading critics and are sought after by collectors worldwide for their balance of power, elegance and clear sense of place.
