Description

The 2020 La Mondotte Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a powerful yet polished expression of Right Bank Bordeaux, crafted from old vines rooted in exceptional limestone and clay. Produced in tiny quantities from a mere 4.5 hectares, it marries depth, precision and luxurious texture in a truly modern classic style. Elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) in 2012, La Mondotte has rapidly become one of Saint-Émilion’s most sought-after wines, recognized for its intensity, purity and remarkable aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Mondotte is deeply colored, with an almost opaque, inky ruby-purple core that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered: ripe black plum, cassis and black cherry are interwoven with graphite, violets, crushed stone, cocoa, and sweet spice from high-quality French oak. Subtle notes of licorice, tobacco leaf and warm earth underline the wine’s limestone origins. On the palate, this is a dense, structured and muscular Saint-Émilion, driven primarily by Merlot with a supporting role from Cabernet Franc. The attack is rich and mouthfilling, with plush dark fruit framed by a firm yet refined tannic spine. There’s a striking interplay between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity, giving great tension and length. Flavors of black plum, blackberry compote and dark cherry mingle with espresso, baking spices, pencil shavings and a distinct mineral salinity on the long, persistent finish. While already impressive in youth, the 2020 clearly has the stuffing to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity, silkier tannins and more tertiary nuances of truffle, leather and forest floor with proper cellaring.

Production
La Mondotte’s 4.5-hectare vineyard sits on the prized limestone slopes above Pavie Decesse, between Bellevue Mondotte and Troplong Mondot, where shallow soils over limestone and clay yield naturally low yields and exceptional concentration. The estate is fully planted to Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, and the vines average around 50 years of age, enhancing depth and complexity. Farming is certified organic and follows the progressive, terroir-focused philosophy of the von Neipperg family, with meticulous work in the vineyard to limit yields to fewer than 10,000 bottles per year. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the character of each block. Modern, small-scale winemaking facilities and temperature-controlled fermentation allow for gentle extraction, after which the wine is aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, adding finesse, spice and structure without overshadowing the purity of fruit and the signature limestone minerality.

Food & Serving
The 2020 La Mondotte is a superb partner for rich, refined cuisine such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, slow-braised short ribs, or game birds like pigeon and duck with truffle or mushroom sauces. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes featuring porcini, black truffle, lentils, or aged hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and aromatics. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the structure and allow the bouquet to fully open; as the wine matures, a shorter decant (30–60 minutes) will generally suffice to remove sediment and awaken its more subtle layers.

Producer
Although La Mondotte’s roots reach back to the 19th century, the estate as it is known today was effectively reborn under the stewardship of the von Neipperg family, who acquired it in 1971 alongside neighboring Canon-La-Gaffelière. For decades the property remained relatively unknown, until Stephan von Neipperg initiated a complete transformation in the mid-1990s: rebuilding the château, installing state-of-the-art winemaking facilities and custom cellars, and collaborating with renowned oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt. With drastically reduced yields, the introduction of new oak and a renewed focus on the extraordinary clay-limestone terroir, the 1996 vintage marked a turning point and drew significant critical acclaim. A succession of outstanding vintages propelled La Mondotte from unclassified status to Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) in the 2012 Saint-Émilion classification, establishing it as one of the appellation’s modern icons and a benchmark for concentrated yet finely etched, terroir-driven Bordeaux.
