Description
The 2020 Kistler Laguna Ridge Russian River Valley Chardonnay Magnum showcases Kistler’s signature balance of richness and precision in a celebratory large-format bottle. Sourced from the western reaches of the Russian River Valley, this Chardonnay captures the cool-climate intensity and layered complexity that have made Kistler a benchmark in California. The magnum format not only elevates the sense of occasion, but also allows the wine to evolve more slowly and gracefully over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Laguna Ridge Chardonnay is a luminous, pale gold with green highlights, hinting at freshness and youth. The nose is intensely expressive yet refined, offering layers of Meyer lemon, ripe pear and golden apple interwoven with white flowers, crushed stone, and subtle notes of toasted hazelnut, vanilla bean, and warm brioche from élevage in French oak.
On the palate, the wine is concentrated and silky, with a beautifully seamless texture. Ripe orchard fruit and citrus curd are framed by vibrant acidity and a fine mineral spine, giving both energy and length. Hints of baking spice, almond cream and a gentle smokiness emerge with air, leading to a long, saline-tinged finish. In magnum, this 2020 has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed now for its purity and drive, but will gain further complexity and nuance over the next 8–12 years or more.
Production
Laguna Ridge sits on the southwestern edge of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, where cool Pacific breezes and morning fog temper the warmth of the afternoons, preserving acidity and extending the growing season. The vineyard’s well-drained, sandy and loamy soils with underlying clay and sandstone foster low yields and concentrated fruit. Kistler farms using meticulous, hands-on methods, with careful canopy management and selective, hand-harvested picking decisions timed to achieve full flavor ripeness at moderate sugar levels. In the cellar, the grapes are typically whole-cluster pressed and the juice is fermented with native yeasts in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, followed by aging on the lees to build texture and depth. The wine is handled minimally, often bottled unfined and unfiltered, to preserve its site expression and natural intensity.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Chardonnay that shines alongside rich yet refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, roasted chicken with morel cream sauce, or a classic truffle risotto. It also pairs beautifully with creamy cheeses like triple-cream Brie or Brillat-Savarin, as well as simply grilled halibut or turbot with herbs. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F); a touch cooler to start will let the wine gradually open in the glass. For optimal expression, especially from magnum, decant for 30–45 minutes before serving to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl.
Producer
Founded in 1978, Kistler Vineyards has become one of California’s most revered producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, widely recognized for pioneering a Burgundian-inspired, single-vineyard approach in Sonoma. The estate’s philosophy centers on crafting wines from heritage selections and carefully chosen sites that each speak distinctly of their terroir, while maintaining a consistent house style of elegance, intensity, and balance. Over the decades, Kistler has garnered international acclaim, frequent critical praise, and a devoted following among collectors, helping to define the reputation of the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast as world-class regions for Chardonnay.
