Description
The 2020 Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru ‘Petits Monts’ is a refined, small-production Burgundy from one of the appellation’s most coveted hillsides. Perched just above the legendary grand crus of Vosne, Petits Monts is known for marrying silken texture with haunting aromatic complexity. In the concentrated yet beautifully balanced 2020 vintage, Drouhin delivers a wine that captures the magic of Vosne-Romanée: perfumed, intricate and built for graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Premier Cru shows a luminous, deep ruby color with youthful violet highlights along the rim. The nose is immediately expressive and seductive, offering layers of wild strawberry, raspberry and black cherry interlaced with notes of violet, rose petal, star anise and exotic spice, supported by hints of warm earth, fine cedar and a subtle mineral edge.
On the palate, the wine is all about finesse and precision rather than sheer weight. Silky, tightly woven tannins frame a core of ripe red and dark berry fruit, accented by spice, dried orange peel and a touch of sandalwood. The texture is velvety yet vibrant, with lively acidity giving lift and definition. The finish is long and resonant, echoing with cherry, subtle savory undertones and a fine, chalky minerality. While already charming in its youth, this 2020 Petits Monts has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for 10–20 years in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes of forest floor, leather and truffle over time.
Production
Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Petits Monts sits on a steep, well-exposed slope just above some of the village’s most illustrious grand crus, benefiting from thin, brown, limestone-rich soils scattered with small stones and only modest clay—conditions that naturally limit yields and encourage deep-rooted vines. Joseph Drouhin farms these parcels with great respect for the terroir, using manual harvesting and small open crates to protect the Pinot Noir grapes, followed by strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is retained. Depending on the vintage expression, a proportion of whole clusters is included—typically between 20% and 50%—to enhance aromatic lift and tannin finesse. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in small open-top vats, with gentle cap management by pump-overs and occasional punching down over 2 to 3 weeks. After pressing in a vertical press, the wine is aged for roughly 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, around 30% of which are new, allowing the terroir’s delicacy and minerality to remain front and center.
Food & Serving
This Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru is a superb partner for refined dishes that mirror its elegance and complexity: think roast duck breast with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal loin with morel mushrooms, or simply a perfectly roasted chicken with jus. It also shines alongside earthy, delicate preparations such as wild mushroom risotto, truffle-infused dishes and aged but not overly powerful cheeses like Comté or aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness; avoid serving too warm. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine unfurl its floral and spicy bouquet, while older bottles (10+ years) should be decanted gently, if at all, mainly to separate from any sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected and historic family domaines, with holdings that stretch from Chablis down through the Côte d’Or and into the Côte Chalonnaise. Over four generations, the Drouhin family has built a reputation for wines that privilege finesse, purity and a clear expression of terroir, often seen as benchmarks for their respective appellations. In Vosne-Romanée and across the Côte de Nuits, Drouhin’s meticulous, largely organic and biodynamic approach, reliance on indigenous yeasts and sensitive use of oak have earned them a place among the key guardians of classic Burgundy style. Their Premier and Grand Cru bottlings, including this Petits Monts, are highly sought after by collectors for their combination of elegance, complexity and aging potential.
