Description

Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grand Cru 2021 is one of Burgundy’s true crown jewels – a rare and refined Pinot Noir from one of the region’s most hallowed vineyards. Drawn from a tiny 0.4-hectare parcel on the fabled Musigny slope, this wine marries sensual texture with striking mineral precision. In a vintage marked by low yields and exceptional balance, it offers a classical, utterly charming expression of Côte de Nuits Grand Cru that will delight both collectors and seasoned Burgundy lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Musigny Grand Cru shows a luminous, pure ruby hue, shimmering yet delicate, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose is immediately captivating: a vibrant bouquet of violets, wild roses and blossoming flowers intertwines with red and black cherries, exotic spices and a whisper of sandalwood. With air, more complex layers emerge – crushed raspberry, cherry stone, a touch of blood orange, and subtle notes of forest floor, wet earth and fine leather that promise impressive evolution. On the palate, this Musigny is all about harmony and detail. The attack is silky and expansive, with a velvet-like texture that glides effortlessly across the tongue. Intense yet beautifully poised flavors of ripe cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry are framed by a distinct mineral drive, reflecting its limestone-rich terroir. Fine-grained, elegant tannins provide structure without ever feeling harsh, while the lively acidity brings lift, freshness and definition. The very long, refined finish lingers with nuances of candied cherry, exotic wood, subtle spice and a lingering floral echo. Built for the long haul, this wine will reward patience over 15–25 years or more, yet the purity and balance of the 2021 vintage also make it seductively approachable in its youth after a generous decant.

Production
Musigny sits on a limestone terrace overlooking Clos de Vougeot, between the cool, protective combes of Chambolle and Orveaux. The Joseph Drouhin vines here grow on a gentle east-facing slope, rooted in brown, limestone-rich soils strewn with small stones and relatively low in clay, giving naturally low yields and exceptional aromatic finesse. All grapes are hand-harvested into small open crates, with meticulous sorting to retain only the healthiest bunches. Depending on the character of the vintage, 20–50% of the harvest is vinified as whole clusters to enhance floral aromatics and structural complexity. Fermentation and maceration take place over 2–3 weeks in small open vats, with gentle punch-downs and pump-overs, using only indigenous yeasts to preserve terroir expression. Pressing is carried out in a vertical press, with separate tastings to select the finest press fractions. The wine is then aged for 16–20 months in French oak barrels, around 30% new, allowing the Grand Cru texture and perfume to shine through without overwhelming the wine with wood.

Food & Serving
This is a meditative, gastronomic wine best paired with refined cuisine. Consider dishes such as roast pigeon or duck with cherries, veal tenderloin with morel mushrooms, pigeon pastilla, or a simple but perfectly cooked rack of lamb with rosemary. Earthy dishes with truffle, wild mushroom risotto, or roast squab also highlight its haunting aromatics and silken texture. Soft, aged cheeses like Époisses, Brillat-Savarin or a mature Comté make excellent pairings as well. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F), slightly cooler than room temperature, to emphasize freshness and finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours in youth helps unfold the floral and spicy complexity; for bottles with more age, a gentle, shorter decant just before serving is recommended.

Producer
Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected family domaines, renowned for its elegance, finesse and unwavering focus on terroir. Over four generations, the Drouhin family has assembled an enviable mosaic of vineyards across the Côte d’Or, Chablis and beyond, including exceptional holdings in some of the region’s most coveted Grands Crus such as Musigny. A pioneer of sustainable and organic practices in Burgundy, the estate is now largely farmed biodynamically, with an emphasis on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and a light touch in the cellar. Joseph Drouhin’s Musigny Grand Cru is considered one of the domaine’s pinnacle wines – a benchmark for Chambolle-Musigny’s most noble terroir and a reference point for collectors seeking purity, refinement and ageworthy Burgundy.
