Description

The 2020 Joseph Drouhin Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a benchmark red Burgundy, capturing the depth and poise of one of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted crus. Sourced from a tiny holding within this legendary vineyard, it marries power, refinement, and a beautifully detailed expression of Pinot Noir. With extremely limited production and the precision winemaking of Joseph Drouhin behind it, this is a collector’s bottle built for both contemplation and long-term cellaring. Bonnes-Mares is uniquely positioned between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, bringing together the floral elegance of the former with the structure and intensity of the latter. The vineyard’s mosaic of limestone-rich soils and clays has long been prized, and its wines have enjoyed a near-mythic reputation among Burgundy lovers since at least the 19th century. In 2020, low yields and exceptional fruit concentration have produced a Grand Cru of remarkable energy, purity and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Joseph Drouhin shows a deep, shimmering ruby to garnet core with a vibrant, translucent rim—concentrated yet unmistakably Pinot Noir. The nose is compelling and layered: pure red and black cherry, wild strawberry and blackcurrant mingle with violets and rose petals, before deeper tones of exotic spice, sandalwood, star anise, and a fine, chalky minerality emerge. With air, notes of forest floor, subtle game, and refined oak spice (cedar, fine vanilla, a touch of cocoa) add further complexity. On the palate, this is both luxurious and tightly focused. The attack is silky and expansive, with ripe cherry, raspberry and dark plum wrapped in a velvety texture. Beneath the generous fruit lies a clear mineral spine and finely etched tannins—firm yet ultra-refined—providing shape and tension. Flavors of candied cherry, blood orange zest, sweet spice and hints of rare tea and incense carry through on a very long, precise finish. The acidity is fresh and lively, giving lift to the wine’s richness and suggesting superb aging potential. This 2020 Bonnes-Mares is already captivating in its youth but is clearly built to evolve. Expect it to gain further aromatic complexity—truffle, underbrush, dried rose, leather and tobacco—over 12–25 years, with its structure and balance promising graceful development rather than simple longevity.

Production
Joseph Drouhin’s Bonnes-Mares parcel lies on a gentle east- to southeast-facing slope, where brown, limestone-rich soils are interspersed with stones and varying proportions of clay and white marl. This complex terroir, straddling the stylistic line between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, naturally yields Pinot Noir of both perfume and structure. The domaine practices meticulous, sustainable viticulture, with hand harvesting into small crates to protect the integrity of the berries, followed by careful sorting in the winery. Depending on the vintage character, a proportion of whole clusters (often in the 20–50% range) is retained to enhance aromatic lift and tannin finesse. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in small open-top vats, with a combination of gentle punch-downs and pump-overs over approximately 2–3 weeks to extract color, flavor, and fine-grained tannin without excess harshness. The wine is then pressed in a vertical press, with press fractions tasted and selected for quality, and aged 16–20 months in French oak barrels, around one-third of which are new, allowing the terroir’s voice to remain at the forefront.

Food & Serving
This is a Grand Cru to place at the center of a refined meal. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled lamb (rack or saddle), pigeon or duck breast, veal with morels, or delicately sauced game birds. Dishes highlighting earthy elements—wild mushrooms, truffle, root vegetables, or a jus reduction—underscore the wine’s mineral and savory dimensions, while a well-aged hard cheese (such as Comté or aged Gruyère) can make for a contemplative pairing. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if opened within its first decade, a gentle decant of 45–60 minutes helps the aromatics blossom and the structure relax. For well-matured bottles, simply double-decant shortly before serving to preserve the most delicate tertiary nuances.

Producer
Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s most respected and historically important family domaines, with holdings stretching from Chablis in the north to the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Now in the hands of the fourth generation, Drouhin has been a pioneer of sustainable and organic/biodyamic viticulture in the region, emphasizing finesse, purity, and transparency of terroir over sheer power. Their deep roots in Chambolle-Musigny and the surrounding villages have given them access to some of the Côte d’Or’s most illustrious crus, including Bonnes-Mares. Over the decades, Drouhin has earned a reputation among critics and collectors alike for producing consistently elegant, ageworthy wines that capture the essence of their origins, making this Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru not just a rare bottle but an authentic expression of one of Burgundy’s great houses.
