Description
The 2020 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered domaines. Sourced from the legendary Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard, this wine marries power and precision in a way that few producers can achieve. In the ripe yet finely balanced 2020 vintage, Ramonet delivers a Grand Cru Chardonnay of remarkable depth, tension, and aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet glows a luminous pale gold, deepening toward the rim with hints of green and straw, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is beautifully layered and slow to unfold, revealing notes of ripe lemon and Meyer lemon, white peach, and pear, interwoven with acacia blossom, fresh almonds, and a subtle smokiness. As it opens, more complex nuances emerge—brioche, crushed stone, hazelnut, and a delicate touch of buttered pastry, all wrapped in Ramonet’s signature cool, minty, almost verbena-like lift.
On the palate, this Grand Cru is full-bodied and textural, yet extraordinarily composed. A core of ripe stone fruit and citrus is framed by vibrant acidity and an intensely saline, mineral backbone. Flavors of lemon curd, baked apple, nectarine, and toasted hazelnut are layered with hints of vanilla pod, crème fraîche, and a fine, chalky grip that carries through to an exceptionally long, resonant finish. Still tightly coiled in its youth, this 2020 has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 10–20 years or more, gaining in complexity, creaminess, and tertiary notes of honey, nuts, and truffle with time in the cellar.
Production
This wine hails from the fabled Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, straddling the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune, an area prized for its deep, well-drained limestone and clay-limestone soils that naturally yield powerful, structured Chardonnays. Jean-Claude Ramonet farms his parcels with meticulous care, favoring low yields and careful vineyard work to ensure optimal ripeness and balance, typically harvesting by hand in small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and allowed to ferment in oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, with élevage on fine lees to build texture and complexity. The use of oak is masterfully judged—present but never dominant—allowing the underlying terroir of Bâtard-Montrachet and the hallmark Ramonet freshness to shine through.
Food & Serving
The 2020 Jean-Claude Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru deserves to be paired with refined, richly textured dishes that can stand up to its power and complexity. Think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops with a beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole in a cream or Champagne sauce, roast chicken with morel mushrooms, or veal in a light, creamy jus. It also shines alongside aged Comté, Beaufort, or other nutty, hard cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F); if too cold, it may seem closed, so allow it to gently warm in the glass. Decanting young vintages for 30–60 minutes is recommended to help the wine unfurl aromatically and texturally, especially in its first decade of life.
