Description

2020 Giodo La Quinta Toscana is a refined Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most exciting boutique estates, crafted by renowned Italian winemaker Carlo Ferrini. Sourced from Giodo’s fifth-planted vineyard—hence the name “La Quinta”—this wine offers a more approachable, elegant expression when compared to the estate’s Brunello, while still capturing the soul of great Tuscan Sangiovese. It stands out for its purity of fruit, polished structure, and the careful use of oak that highlights, rather than masks, the character of the vineyard.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Quinta shows a bright, medium ruby hue with a youthful vibrancy at the rim, hinting at its energy and freshness. The nose opens with pure red cherry and sour cherry notes, followed by nuances of red berries, cocoa, and fine milk chocolate. Subtle layers of hazelnut, dried herbs, and a gentle floral lift add complexity as the wine evolves in the glass. On the palate, this is sleek and precise rather than heavy, with a lively core of crunchy red berries and juicy cherry framed by supple yet highly polished tannins. The influence of oak is discreet, supporting the fruit with a touch of spice and nutty refinement rather than dominating it. There’s a pleasing interplay of freshness and texture, leading into a long, clean finish with hints of cherry, cocoa, and roasted hazelnut. Very enjoyable now for its vivid fruit and finesse, it also has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for up to 8–10 years from the vintage.

Production
La Quinta comes from a single 3.5-hectare Sangiovese vineyard planted at around 300 meters above sea level on southeast-facing slopes in the Brunello di Montalcino area. The soils here are predominantly poor clay studded with small stones, naturally limiting yields and enhancing concentration, while the altitude and exposure ensure excellent ripening balanced by freshness. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand, preserving only perfectly healthy, ripe bunches. In the cellar, Sangiovese is vinified with respect for fruit purity and terroir definition, then aged for 12 months in a combination of 500- and 1,200-liter oak barrels. The larger formats and moderate time in wood are chosen deliberately to soften and refine the tannins while keeping the oak imprint subtle, allowing the vibrant red fruit and site character to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This elegant yet flavorful Sangiovese is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with classic Tuscan cuisine such as grilled pork, bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb, or pasta with ragù. It also works well with earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, game birds, and aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); a light decant of 30–60 minutes helps the aromatics unfurl and smooths the tannins, especially in its youth.

Producer
Giodo is the personal wine project of famed Italian winemaker and consultant Carlo Ferrini, one of the most respected figures in contemporary Tuscan viticulture. Named in honor of his parents, Giovanna and Donatello, Giodo represents Ferrini’s pursuit of absolute quality through meticulous attention to detail, from vineyard selection to final bottling. The Montalcino story of Giodo began in 2002, when Ferrini secured his first hectare in the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino appellation. Today the estate encompasses around six hectares of vineyards situated between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, a site prized for its ideal combination of aspect, altitude, and soil diversity. With its cypress-lined approach and panoramic views over the rolling hills of Montalcino toward Monte Amiata, Giodo has quickly gained a reputation as a benchmark small estate, producing both Brunello di Montalcino and top-quality IGT Toscana wines that are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
