Description
2020 Can Blau from Cellers Can Blau is a richly structured Montsant red that showcases the power and perfume of Spain’s Mediterranean hillsides. Crafted from old-vine Cariñena, Syrah and Garnacha and aged in oak, it offers serious depth while remaining beautifully polished in the glass. This cuvée is part of the Juan Gil Family Estates portfolio, a name revered for raising the profile of Spanish regions and delivering remarkable quality for the price.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Can Blau shows a deep, vivid ruby to purple hue, with an almost opaque core and bright, youthful rim. The nose is expressive and seductive: notes of sweet wood smoke, cigar box and incense are wrapped around ripe black cherry, dark plum and a touch of lavender and dried Mediterranean herbs.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, mouth-filling wine with a velvety, rounded texture and plenty of concentration. Juicy black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit are layered with hints of cocoa, sweet spice, smoked wood and a subtle savory, mineral edge from the varied soils. Tannins are firm yet polished, giving the wine a solid backbone without feeling harsh, and the acidity keeps everything lively and fresh. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice and a gentle touch of smoke. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it has the structure to age gracefully for 6–10 years from vintage, gaining more complexity and integration over time.
Production
Cellers Can Blau draws fruit from some of Montsant’s most distinctive sites, each planted to a different grape and soil. Garnacha vines, 25–40 years old, grow at around 750 meters in Cornudella de Montsant on poor, slate (llicorella) soils that lend intensity and minerality. Cariñena comes from Darmós and Masroig, rooted in clay that imparts structure and depth, while Syrah is planted on limestone, contributing lift and aromatic finesse. The old vines naturally produce low yields of concentrated berries, which are harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. In the cellar, the varieties are vinified with a focus on preserving fruit purity and regional character, followed by 12 months of aging in oak barriques, allowing the different components to knit together and adding layers of spice, smoke and texture without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic red that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as rice-based plates (paella, baked rice), hearty pasta with ragù or mushroom sauces, roasted or stewed vegetables, and earthy dishes featuring wild mushrooms. It is a natural partner for sausages, pork dishes, slow-cooked stews, and both red and white meats, especially when grilled, roasted or served with savory sauces, as well as with semi-cured and medium-aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for the best expression of fruit and spice. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic complexity and polished texture.
Producer
Cellers Can Blau is part of Gil Family Estates (Juan Gil), a historic family-run group founded in 1916 in the heart of Jumilla. Over more than a century, the Juan Gil family has been instrumental in putting lesser-known Spanish regions on the world wine map, combining deep respect for tradition with modern winemaking and a strong environmental conscience. Their portfolio includes icons such as Clio and the world-renowned El Nido, wines that have earned international acclaim and high critical scores. The Can Blau project in Montsant focuses on expressing local varieties—Garnacha, Cariñena, Monastrell and Syrah—through carefully selected vineyards and thoughtful, terroir-driven winemaking, making it a reference for distinctive, high-value wines from this dynamic Catalan appellation.
