Description

The 2020 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia is one of the great benchmark Barolos of our time – a wine of depth, tension and almost aristocratic elegance. Sourced from the famed Francia cru in Serralunga d’Alba, it combines power and structure with a refined, finely etched profile that demands time and patience. This is classic, ageworthy Barolo in its purest, most uncompromising form, from a producer who helped define the very style of the region. What sets Barolo Francia apart is its singular combination of intensity and restraint: tightly wound in youth, it gradually unfurls layers of red fruit, florals, spice and mineral complexity as it matures. Long macerations, traditional large cask aging and fastidious vineyard work all contribute to a wine that is both deeply authentic and consistently among the most sought-after in Piedmont. Historically, the Francia vineyard has been central to Conterno’s legend; in exceptional years its entire production is elevated to become the mythical Barolo Riserva Monfortino, as was the case in 2019 – making the return of a dedicated Francia in 2020 especially anticipated.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barolo Francia shows a luminous, yet concentrated garnet core with classic brick-tinged reflections at the rim that will deepen and evolve over time. The nose is initially restrained but incredibly precise: wild cherries, sour red plum and crushed raspberry are interwoven with notes of rose petals, violet, orange zest, anise, licorice, and hints of dried herbs. Subtle undertones of tar, iron, tobacco leaf and crushed rock speak clearly of Serralunga’s iron-rich soils and add a captivating, savory dimension. On the palate, this is vertical and focused, with a firm backbone of tannin and a vivid line of acidity that carries the wine effortlessly across the tongue. The fruit profile leans toward red cherry, redcurrant and blood orange, layered with hints of pomegranate, tea leaf, dried roses and sweet spices. The tannins are abundant yet incredibly fine-grained and polished, wrapping the palate without feeling heavy, and the finish is long, dry and mineral, echoing with spice, floral and ferrous notes long after each sip. While already showing its pedigree, the 2020 Francia is built for the cellar: it will reward at least 8–10 years of aging, with an optimal drinking window likely from the early 2030s and the capacity to age gracefully for two to three decades in good conditions.

Production
Barolo Francia is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the renowned Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most prized slopes. Here, the combination of calcareous clay and iron-rich marl, steep exposures and significant diurnal temperature shifts produces Nebbiolo of remarkable structure, perfume and mineral clarity. The Giacomo Conterno team farms the vines with meticulous care, focusing on low yields and rigorous selection in the vineyard to ensure only the healthiest, most perfectly ripe bunches are brought to the cellar. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to pick at optimal physiological ripeness. In the winery, Conterno follows a resolutely traditional approach: long macerations on the skins to extract complexity and structure, followed by extended maturation in large neutral Slavonian oak botti. This minimal-intervention, time-honored vinification is designed to let the vineyard speak clearly, resulting in a Barolo that is both profoundly terroir-driven and unmistakably Conterno in style.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that shines at the table with refined, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and complexity. Think classic Piedmontese cuisine: tajarin with white truffle, brasato al Barolo (slow-braised beef), veal shin, or game birds such as pigeon or guinea fowl. Mature hard cheeses (Parmigiano-Reggiano, aged Pecorino) and mushroom-based dishes, particularly with porcini, also make excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to help the wine open up; for bottles with more age, a gentler, shorter decant of around 30–60 minutes will be sufficient to remove sediment and let the bouquet blossom.

Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the most revered names in Piedmont and a foundational reference for traditional Barolo. Founded in the early 20th century by the Conterno family, the winery became famous for its uncompromising approach to quality and its pioneering role in shaping Barolo as a long-lived, cellar-worthy red. Over the decades, through successive generations, Conterno has earned a reputation for producing some of Italy’s most collectible and ageworthy wines, particularly the legendary Barolo Riserva Monfortino. Today, under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno, the estate continues to champion low yields, rigorous selection and extended aging in large cask, remaining a staunch defender of classic Barolo in a region that has seen many stylistic shifts. Their holdings in crus like Francia have cemented the domaine’s status as a benchmark not only for Barolo, but for fine wine worldwide.
