Description
The 2020 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Arione is a profound, single-vineyard expression from one of Barolo’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced from the steep Arione cru in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine captures Nebbiolo’s power and precision in a remarkably pure, ageworthy form. It sits alongside Conterno’s legendary bottlings as a testament to meticulous farming, long élevage, and an unwavering commitment to classic Barolo.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barolo Arione shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of Nebbiolo yet with a striking depth of color for the vintage. The nose is complex and tightly woven at first, unfolding with time to reveal layers of red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange, interlaced with dried rose petals, violets, anise, and hints of tar, sweet tobacco and iron-rich earth.
On the palate, Arione tends to emphasize structure and mineral drive, and the 2020 vintage is no exception. The attack is precise and energetic, with pure red fruit and subtle dark berry tones wrapped in refined but authoritative tannins. Notes of licorice, crushed stone, savory herbs and fine spice build through the mid-palate, leading to a long, resonant finish that lingers with saline minerality and floral lift. While already showing impressive balance, this wine is built for long-term aging and will reward patience over 15–25+ years, gaining further complexity, harmony and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The Arione vineyard lies in Serralunga d’Alba, adjacent to the famed Francia cru, on steep slopes rich in calcareous marl and compact clay. This terroir is known for producing Barolo with firm structure, deep minerality and remarkable longevity. Giacomo Conterno farms Arione with exacting care, practicing low yields and meticulous selection in the vineyard. Harvest is carried out by hand, with bunches carefully sorted to ensure only pristine Nebbiolo grapes are used. In the cellar, Conterno follows a resolutely traditional approach: an extended fermentation and maceration on the skins in stainless steel, followed by a prolonged maturation in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti. This slow, patient vinification allows the vineyard character to shine through without overt oak influence, and confers the elegance, depth and aging capacity that define this Barolo.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Barolo that comes into its own alongside richly flavored dishes. Think braised veal shank or osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, or classic Piemontese specialties such as brasato al Barolo, tajarin with white truffle, or agnolotti del plin. Mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Castelmagno also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F); if opened in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to help the aromas unwind and the tannins soften. For fully mature bottles, a gentle, shorter decant is sufficient, mainly to separate any sediment.
Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the benchmark names in Piedmont and a global reference point for traditionally made Barolo. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate rose to fame with the creation of Barolo Monfortino, a wine that helped define the idea of Barolo as a long-lived, world-class red. Today, under the direction of Roberto Conterno, the winery continues to champion extended macerations, large Slavonian oak casks and vineyard-focused bottlings such as Francia and Arione. Its holdings in Serralunga d’Alba sit on some of the appellation’s most coveted slopes, and the estate’s unwavering dedication to quality has earned it a reputation as one of the most important and influential producers in the Barolo region.
