Description
The 2020 Geografico Brunello di Montalcino Tricerchi is a refined expression of classic Brunello, crafted from Sangiovese in one of Italy’s most revered wine regions. Combining traditional craftsmanship with a precise sense of place, this red offers both immediate charm and serious aging potential. As part of the historic Brunello di Montalcino appellation, it reflects the style that made the area one of the benchmarks for world-class Italian reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Brunello shows a deep garnet-ruby core with bright, youthful reflections at the rim. The nose opens with pure, varietal Sangiovese character: red cherries, wild strawberries, and plum skin layered with dried herbs, rose petals, and hints of tobacco and cedar. Subtle notes of leather, sweet spices and a touch of forest floor emerge with air, speaking to both the terroir and the wine’s structure.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a firm yet refined tannic backbone, balanced by fresh, vibrant acidity. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant and blood orange are intertwined with notes of dried thyme, licorice, and a delicate savory undertone. The oak is well-integrated, adding gentle spice and structure rather than dominating the fruit. While enjoyable with proper aeration in its youth, this Brunello is built to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances of leather, dried flowers and truffle over time.
Production
Sourced from select vineyards in the rolling hills surrounding Montalcino, the 2020 Geografico Brunello di Montalcino Tricerchi benefits from a terroir of well-drained galestro and limestone-rich soils, combined with the area’s marked diurnal temperature swings that help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Sangiovese (locally known as Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello) is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure strict selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified with temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract color, structure and aromatic depth. It then undergoes a lengthy maturation in large oak casks and/or barrels, in line with Brunello regulations, allowing the tannins to soften and the wine’s complex bouquet to develop before bottling and additional bottle aging.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is an excellent partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, roasted lamb, or game like venison and wild boar. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, truffle-based dishes, mushroom ragù, and hearty pasta with meat sauces. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften; older bottles may need a shorter, more gentle decant primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Geografico is a well-established Tuscan producer known for championing the classic appellations of the region, particularly Chianti and neighboring fine reds. With deep roots in central Tuscany, the estate has long focused on Sangiovese as its flagship variety, working closely with local growers and vineyards to express the diversity of the region’s terroirs. Their Brunello di Montalcino bottlings, such as Tricerchi, reinforce Geografico’s role in bringing authentic, regionally expressive wines to a wider audience, while maintaining a strong link to traditional winemaking practices that have defined Montalcino’s reputation worldwide.
