Description
The 2020 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Jeroboam (3L) is a monumental expression of pure Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most admired estates. Bottled in an impressive double magnum format, it’s made for collectors, special occasions and long, slow evolution in the cellar. This is a benchmark wine that regularly wins raves from top critics for its balance, length, intensity and finesse, embodying the modern, polished face of Tuscan Sangiovese while remaining deeply true to its origins in Chianti Classico.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Flaccianello reveals a deep, vibrant ruby-red hue with youthful purple highlights, concentrated yet brilliantly clear. The nose opens with intense, layered aromas of ripe black cherries and plums, intertwined with notes of violets, vanilla, and delicate sweet spice from fine French oak. With air, more complex nuances emerge—cocoa, tobacco leaf, a hint of cedar, and subtle earthy tones that promise further development with time.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably poised, combining richness with striking freshness. Juicy dark fruit—black cherry, blackberry and plum—is framed by silky, ripe tannins that give a velvety texture without ever feeling heavy. Flavors of cocoa, tobacco, licorice and a touch of espresso add depth through the long, warm, and impeccably clean finish. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is already impressive, but the 3-liter format significantly extends aging potential: properly cellared, this Jeroboam can easily evolve for 20+ years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes while retaining its core of vibrant fruit.
Production
Flaccianello della Pieve is sourced from Fontodi’s highest-quality Sangiovese parcels in Panzano in Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico zone. The vineyards sit on the renowned "Conca d’Oro" (Golden Shell), an amphitheater-shaped valley with excellent exposure, well-drained galestro and limestone-rich soils, and a marked day–night temperature swing that enhances aromatic complexity and freshness. The vines, planted at a high density of about 6,000 vines per hectare and trained using the Guyot pruning system, naturally produce low yields of concentrated fruit. Harvest is carried out by hand with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe Sangiovese berries are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using only native yeasts, preserving the character of the terroir. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation occurs in barriques, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French oak barrels from Allier and Tronçais forests, adding refinement, structure and subtle spice without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Sangiovese is a superb partner for richly flavored Tuscan and Italian dishes: think bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shanks, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, osso buco, or roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle dishes, and hearty mushroom preparations. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and concentration—especially in Jeroboam format—decanting is highly recommended: 2–3 hours before serving will allow the wine to open up, soften the tannins, and fully express its layered aromatics and impressive length.
Producer
Fontodi is a certified organic estate located in Panzano in Chianti, in the very heart of the Chianti Classico region, and has been owned by the Manetti family since the late 1960s. The family, historically known for producing high-quality terracotta, brought the same obsession with craftsmanship to winegrowing, transforming Fontodi into one of Tuscany’s most respected producers. Over the decades, Fontodi has been a driving force in elevating Sangiovese, helping to redefine Chianti Classico and Tuscan reds on the world stage with wines that combine traditional varieties and terroir with meticulous, modern vineyard and cellar practices. Flaccianello della Pieve is the estate’s flagship pure Sangiovese and a true icon of the region, consistently garnering top scores and acclaim from leading critics such as Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni for its elegance, power and aging capacity.
