Description

The 2020 Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo BIO is a benchmark single-vineyard Chianti made from organically grown grapes in the famed Conca d’Oro amphitheatre of Panzano. This is Fontodi’s flagship expression of Sangiovese, subtly enriched with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon to bring depth and polish without losing regional character. Classified as Gran Selezione and matured longer than a traditional Riserva, it captures the sweet spot between power, precision, and Tuscan charm.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vigna del Sorbo shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with garnet reflections that hint at its structure and aging potential. The nose is immediately seductive and layered: sweet and sour cherries, ripe blackberries, and dark plums are woven together with notes of dried rose petals, tobacco leaf, cedar, and warm spice. Underneath lie hints of Mediterranean herbs, licorice, and a fine, earthy minerality that speaks clearly of Chianti Classico. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, combining juicy red and black cherry fruit with nuances of blackcurrant from the Cabernet component. The texture is silky but structured, with refined, ripe tannins that frame flavors of cherry, blackberry, sweet spice, cocoa, and a touch of savory leather. Fresh acidity keeps everything lively and food-friendly, while the long finish lingers with notes of spice, violets, and subtle oak. This 2020 has the concentration and backbone to age gracefully for 12–20 years, evolving towards more complex tertiary notes of forest floor, truffle, and dried fruit with time in the cellar.

Production
Vigna del Sorbo comes from Fontodi’s prime plots in the Conca d’Oro of Panzano, a natural south-facing amphitheatre at about 450 meters above sea level. The combination of galestro-rich soils, excellent drainage, abundant sunlight, and marked diurnal temperature swings allows Sangiovese to ripen fully while maintaining remarkable freshness and aromatic complexity. Certified organic (BIO), the vineyards are farmed with great respect for the environment, with naturally low yields and meticulous hand-harvesting. The blend is predominantly Sangiovese, complemented by around 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from 35-year-old vines, harvested 1–2 weeks later to ensure perfect ripeness. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with indigenous yeasts over a maceration of at least three weeks, extracting fine tannins and intense color. The wine then ages for about 24 months in French oak barriques, 50% new and 50% seasoned, followed by additional time in bottle, giving both the Riserva and Gran Selezione designation its depth, polish, and longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a classic, serious Chianti Classico built for the table, pairing beautifully with traditional Tuscan cuisine and rich, savory dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled Chianina beef, lamb chops with rosemary, braised short ribs, wild boar ragù, or aged pecorino and other hard cheeses. It also works wonderfully with truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, and robust pasta sauces based on tomato, herbs, and game. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromas to unfurl and the tannins to soften; older bottles (10+ years) may need a gentler, shorter decant to separate any sediment while preserving delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Fontodi is one of the most respected estates in Chianti Classico, based in the village of Panzano in the heart of Tuscany. Owned by the Manetti family since the late 1960s, the estate sits in the highly prized Conca d’Oro, long regarded as one of the region’s ‘grand cru’ areas for Sangiovese thanks to its ideal exposure, altitude, and soils. Under the guidance of Giovanni Manetti and renowned consultant Franco Bernabei, Fontodi has become a reference point for high-quality, organically farmed Chianti Classico and single-vineyard wines, helping to redefine the reputation of the appellation on the world stage. Their unwavering focus on terroir expression, low yields, sustainable viticulture, and meticulous cellar work has earned them consistent critical acclaim and a devoted following among collectors and serious wine lovers.
