Description
The 2020 Fattoria le Pupille Saffredi Magnum is a commanding Super Tuscan from one of Maremma’s most iconic estates. Sourced from a tiny 5-hectare vineyard situated 250 meters above sea level, this is the winery’s flagship wine and a benchmark for power, elegance, and longevity along the Tuscan coast. In magnum format, its depth, structure, and aging potential are amplified, making it an exceptional choice for cellaring or special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Saffredi shows an intense, almost opaque ruby color with youthful purple highlights, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe blackberries, blackcurrants and dark plums unfold alongside notes of wild herbs, vanilla, cedar, and fine oak. As it opens, more complex nuances of black cherry, dark berry compote, balsamic tones, and a touch of sweet spice and cocoa emerge.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured red with impressive structure. Dense black fruit flavors—blackberry, black cherry, and ripe plum—are wrapped in firm yet refined tannins and enlivened by a fresh, balancing acidity. Subtle notes of cinnamon, vanilla, cedarwood, coffee, and a smoky, tobacco-like edge add complexity and length. The finish is long, spicy, and slightly savory, with a lingering hint of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. In magnum, the 2020 Saffredi has excellent aging potential; enjoy it now with a long decant, or cellar it for 15–20 years to allow the tannins to soften and its tertiary notes to fully unfold.
Production
Saffredi comes from a small, meticulously tended 5-hectare vineyard in the hills of Maremma, in southern Tuscany, at around 250 meters above sea level. The coastal influence and well-drained soils contribute to the wine’s combination of ripe fruit, freshness, and minerality, while low yields and careful, manual harvesting ensure only perfectly ripe grapes are selected. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with a focus on concentration and finesse, then aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, approximately 75% of which are new. This significant proportion of new oak adds structure, fine tannins, and spice, while respecting the purity and intensity of the fruit typical of a top Super Tuscan.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined red pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, game (venison, wild boar), and hearty stews. It also works well with aged Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, and truffle dishes, or simply alongside a platter of cured meats and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and structure, especially in magnum format, decant for 2–3 hours before serving to allow the aromas and tannins to fully open up.
Producer
Fattoria le Pupille is one of the pioneering estates of Maremma in southern Tuscany, and a key name in the rise of the region’s modern wine reputation. Led for decades by visionary owner Elisabetta Geppetti, the winery helped put Maremma on the world wine map with ambitious reds that combined Tuscan character with international grape varieties and refined French oak élevage. Saffredi, first produced in the late 1980s, quickly became the estate’s flagship and a reference-point Super Tuscan, regularly earning top scores from influential critics and cementing Fattoria le Pupille’s status as a leading producer in coastal Tuscany.
