Description
The 2020 Egon Müller Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese Scharzhof is a benchmark Mosel Riesling from one of the most revered producers in the world. Combining crystalline precision with remarkable depth, it offers the classic interplay of sweetness, minerality and acidity that Spätlese lovers seek out. Sourced from the famed Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard on the Saar, this is a wine with a long track record of aging gracefully for decades and is considered essential by serious Riesling collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a pale lemon color with youthful green reflections, hinting at both freshness and intensity. The nose is rich yet ethereal, opening with rosewood, delicate rose petals and white flowers, followed by citrus zest, ripe stone fruits, and a fine, smoky-spicy undertone that speaks clearly of its Saar slate origins.
On the palate, the wine is both mouthfilling and refined: juicy, concentrated fruit—think ripe peach, apricot and mirabelle—woven together with vibrant citrus and a pronounced, saline minerality. The sweetness is beautifully judged and perfectly countered by a vivid, linear acidity, giving the wine lift and tension rather than weight. The finish is very long, salty and precise, with great clarity and a sense that the wine is only just beginning to reveal its potential. Still extremely youthful, this 2020 Spätlese is a true long-distance runner and will evolve positively for 20+ years in a good cellar, gaining complexity, honeyed notes and further depth over time.
Production
The Braune Kupp vineyard in Wiltingen, on the Saar, is a steep, slate-rich slope whose brown, weathered slate soils and cool climate produce Rieslings of remarkable finesse, tension and mineral intensity. Egon Müller’s philosophy is one of meticulous, low-intervention viticulture: careful, often manual work in the vineyard, low yields, and multiple selective hand harvests to pick only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes at the ideal moment. For this Spätlese, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented with natural yeasts at cool temperatures in traditional large oak casks (Fuder), allowing the wine to ferment slowly and retain both its fine aromatics and a carefully balanced level of residual sweetness. The result is an elegantly crafted, precisely tuned Riesling that captures the essence of its great terroir.
Food & Serving
This Spätlese’s balance of sweetness, acidity and minerality makes it an extremely versatile food wine. It pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine such as Thai or Vietnamese dishes, Szechuan-inspired plates, or aromatic curries, where its residual sugar and freshness can tame heat and complement bold flavors. It is also superb with refined dishes like roasted duck with fruit accompaniments, veal in delicate cream sauces, foie gras, or soft and semi-soft cheeses such as washed-rind cheeses and aged goat cheeses. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F). While decanting is not strictly necessary, a short time in the glass or carafe can help the wine open up its aromatic layers, especially in its youth.
