Description

The 2020 E. Guigal Côte‑Rôtie La Turque is one of the Northern Rhône’s modern icons, a single‑vineyard cuvée that showcases the power and precision of Côte Brune Syrah at its finest. Crafted in tiny quantities and aged with Guigal’s trademark attention to detail, La Turque combines intensity, polish, and remarkable depth. Since its debut in the late 1980s, this wine has helped redefine what Côte‑Rôtie can be, standing shoulder to shoulder with the world’s most collectible reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Turque shows a deep, almost opaque ruby‑purple core with a vibrant sheen at the rim, hinting at its youthful concentration. The nose is vivid and layered: blackberries, black cherries, and crème de cassis weave together with smoked bacon, cracked black pepper, violets, licorice, and a refined frame of sweet spices and toasted oak. On the palate, the wine is full‑bodied, richly textured, and impeccably structured, with dense black fruit at its core—think ripe blackberry, plum, and blackcurrant—wrapped in notes of espresso, dark chocolate, cured meat, and graphite. The Syrah’s savory, peppery character is lifted by a small proportion of Viognier, which adds floral lift and a subtle, exotic nuance. Tannins are firm yet velvety, and the acidity is bright enough to keep everything fresh and focused. This 2020 is built for the long haul, with superb aging potential: expect it to hit a beautiful drinking window around 10–15 years from the vintage and continue to evolve gracefully for 25+ years in a good cellar.

Production
La Turque comes from a steep, terraced parcel on the Côte Brune of Côte‑Rôtie, where dark, iron‑rich schist soils and a warm, south‑facing exposure produce Syrah of exceptional power and aromatic complexity. Vines are densely planted and traditionally worked by hand due to the dramatic slopes, with careful selection of low‑yielding fruit at harvest to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. The blend is predominantly Syrah with a small percentage of Viognier co‑fermented in the classic Côte‑Rôtie style, which enhances aromatics and texture. After fermentation, the wine is aged for an extended period—typically around 42 months—in 100% new French oak barrels, a hallmark of Guigal’s single‑vineyard Côte‑Rôties, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine’s signature polish and depth to emerge.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine that shines alongside rich, savory dishes: think roasted or grilled lamb, dry‑aged ribeye, venison, wild boar, or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle dishes, and earthy preparations featuring mushrooms or lentils, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large‑bowled glasses to let the aromatics unfurl. For current drinking, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended; with bottle age, a gentle 60–90 minute decant is usually sufficient to let this Côte‑Rôtie show its full complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, E. Guigal has become the benchmark estate of the Northern Rhône and one of France’s most respected producers. Under the guidance of Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the domaine played a pivotal role in elevating Côte‑Rôtie to global prominence, particularly through its trio of legendary single‑vineyard wines: La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque—often referred to as the “La‑Las.” La Turque, introduced in the late 1980s, quickly gained cult status for its combination of richness, precision, and ageworthiness. Today, Guigal is synonymous with meticulous vineyard work, rigorous selection, and extended élevage, and is widely regarded as a standard‑bearer for the Rhône’s finest Syrah‑based wines.
