Description

The 2020 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Ungeheuer Grand Cru is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the most storied estates in Germany’s Pfalz region. Sourced from a tiny 0.9-hectare parcel in the historic heart of the famed Ungeheuer vineyard in Forst, it marries precision, intensity and mineral depth in an unmistakably terroir-driven style. Crafted under Bürklin-Wolf’s Burgundy-inspired quality philosophy and biodynamic approach, this Grand Cru captures both the power and finesse that have made Ungeheuer legendary among Riesling lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Ungeheuer Grand Cru shows a bright, pale straw color with green reflections, signaling youthful energy and freshness. The nose is warm yet focused, opening with concentrated aromas of iodine, sea spray and damp stone, layered with dried porcini mushrooms, subtle smoke, citrus zest and a hint of ripe orchard fruit. On the palate, this is a taut, saline and finely etched Riesling, combining impressive density with remarkable tension. Flavors of lemon and lime peel, green apple and white peach are wrapped in a pronounced mineral core, with savory, almost umami notes echoing the porcini and a whisper of spice. The structure is firm and linear, with vibrant acidity and a fine, almost tactile tannin grip that frames the long, tightly wound finish. This 2020 is built for longevity: while already complex and expressive, it will gain even more nuance, depth and harmony over the next 10–15 years and beyond, rewarding careful cellaring.

Production
Ungeheuer is one of the great ‘Lagen’ of the Mittelhaardt, lying at the foot of the Haardt mountains in Forst, where a south-east facing slope allows the morning sun to quickly warm the volcanic basalt bedrock. Dense layers of clay and sand over the basalt ensure ideal water retention and mineral uptake, giving Riesling from this site its characteristic power, salinity and depth. Dr. Bürklin-Wolf farms this Grand Cru parcel biodynamically, with low yields and meticulous selection at harvest to capture optimal ripeness and purity. In line with the estate’s Burgundy-inspired classification, the wine is produced as a terroir-first, dry Riesling: gently pressed, fermented with as little intervention as possible and matured in a mix of stainless steel and traditional large, old wooden casks, allowing the vineyard character to shine without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This structured, mineral-driven Grand Cru Riesling pairs beautifully with refined, savory cuisine. Think turbot, halibut or cod with beurre blanc, scallops, crab or lobster, as well as roasted poultry, veal in a light cream or mushroom sauce, and sophisticated vegetable dishes featuring mushrooms, asparagus or root vegetables. It also works exceptionally well with modern Asian-inspired dishes that combine richness and umami with subtle spice. Serve at around 9–11°C (48–52°F); for optimal expression, especially in its youth, decant for 30–60 minutes and enjoy from a high-quality white wine or Riesling glass to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and tension.

Producer
Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is one of Germany’s most important and historic Riesling estates, with centuries of winemaking tradition and around 85 hectares of prime vineyards in the Pfalz, including many of the Mittelhaardt’s most renowned sites in Forst, Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg and Wachenheim. Now led by Bettina Bürklin-Wolf, the 22nd generation of the family, the estate has been a pioneer in rethinking German dry Riesling, adopting a Burgundy-style classification (from village to Premier and Grand Cru) that emphasizes terroir, yield control and ripeness. Since 2001, the vineyards and cellar have been fully biodynamic, a transformation that has further sharpened the estate’s focus on purity, site expression and longevity. A respected member of the VDP, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf consistently ranks among the top producers in the region, known for powerful yet precise, modern Rieslings with vibrant acidity, clarity and impressive aging capacity.
