Description

The 2020 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Langenmorgen Grand Cru is one of the true reference wines of the Mittelhaardt in the Pfalz, a dry Riesling of rare precision and depth. Sourced from a tiny, prime parcel within the historic Langenmorgen vineyard, it combines crystalline fruit with a powerful mineral backbone. Year after year, this cuvée earns top critical acclaim (consistently in the 95–100 point range), and the 2020 continues that legacy with remarkable clarity, structure and aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Langenmorgen Grand Cru shows a bright, pale lemon-gold hue with a youthful brilliance that hints at both freshness and concentration. The first impression on the nose is strikingly pure: flinty, smoky notes of crushed stone and wet slate unfold, quickly followed by perfectly ripe citrus and orchard fruit—lime zest, white peach, and subtle yellow apple—interwoven with delicate herbal and saline nuances. On the palate, this is a dense yet finely etched dry Riesling, combining intensity with remarkable elegance. The fruit profile is concentrated but never heavy, with layers of citrus oil, stone fruits and a whisper of exotic spice riding on a core of chalky, iron-tinged minerality. The wine is not aggressively bone-dry in feel; instead, it offers a textural richness and a faint creaminess that balance its driving acidity and serious, almost tannin-like phenolic grip. The finish is very long, complex and mouth-coating, with lingering flint, spice and salty notes. Built for the long haul, it will develop beautifully over 10–20 years or more, gaining complexity, honeyed nuances and further integration of its mineral character.

Production
Langenmorgen is a historic Grand Cru (Grosses Gewächs) site in the Mittelhaardt, near the villages of Deidesheim and its neighbors, where Dr. Bürklin-Wolf owns just 0.68 hectares of the very finest section of the vineyard. The name "Langenmorgen" stems from an old land-measure: a "Morgen" was the area a man could work in one morning—this particular plot took longer, hence a “long morning.” Here, iron-rich and limestone-influenced sandstone with loose deposits provides excellent drainage, mineral depth and the ability to store warmth, while the nearby forest creates marked diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity and aromatic finesse. Riesling is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard to keep yields low and concentrate terroir expression. Following the Burgundian-style quality pyramid the estate applies to its dry Rieslings, Langenmorgen is treated as a true Grand Cru, with gentle pressing, careful fermentation (typically in large, traditional oak or neutral vessels) and extended maturation on fine lees to enhance texture, complexity and longevity. The result is a wine that captures both the power and finesse of this singular Pfalz terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Riesling is a superb partner for refined, nuanced cuisine. Try it with grilled or poached white fish, shellfish (especially scallops, langoustines and lobster), sushi and sashimi, or finely prepared poultry dishes. Its structure and saline edge also make it excellent with veal, rabbit, and subtly spiced dishes—think modern Asian-inspired plates with ginger, lemongrass or light soy-based sauces—as well as aged hard cheeses and soft goat’s cheese. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended to let the flinty reduction blow off and reveal the layered fruit and minerality; as it ages, a shorter decant or simply giving the wine time in the glass will be sufficient.

Producer
Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is one of Germany’s most historic and influential estates, with roots in the Pfalz dating back to the 16th century. Based in Wachenheim, the family has long been a benchmark for dry Riesling, pioneering a terroir-focused philosophy that parallels the Burgundian model of vineyard classification. Today, the estate owns prime parcels in many of the most renowned "Lagen" of the Mittelhaardt—Forst, Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg and Wachenheim—and has been instrumental in elevating the reputation of Pfalz Riesling on the world stage. As a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter), Dr. Bürklin-Wolf helped shape the conversation around Grosses Gewächs and Grand Cru-level dry wines in Germany, even while using its own Grand Cru and Premier Cru terminology to underline the central role of site. The Langenmorgen Grand Cru stands among the estate’s most iconic and limited bottlings, regularly achieving top scores and reinforcing Bürklin-Wolf’s status as a leader in precision-crafted, ageworthy Riesling.
