Description
The 2020 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée is a refined white Burgundy that captures the poise and power of one of Chassagne’s most esteemed Premier Cru vineyards. Crafted from Chardonnay in a stellar vintage, it combines intensity, minerality and elegance in a highly age-worthy expression. La Romanée is prized for producing wines of both depth and finesse, and this bottling is a benchmark example of that pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a bright, pale to medium straw-yellow color with shimmering green highlights, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is detailed and layered: aromas of ripe citrus (lemon zest, Meyer lemon), white peach and nectarines meet notes of pear, acacia blossom and honeysuckle, all framed by subtle vanilla, toasted hazelnut and a refined, chalky minerality.
On the palate, the 2020 La Romanée is precise yet generous, with a core of ripe stone fruit and citrus wrapped in a finely etched acidity. The texture is silky and mouth-coating without ever feeling heavy, showing beautifully integrated oak and a saline, stony backbone that stretches the wine out across a long, persistent finish. Hints of fresh butter, almond and a touch of spice emerge with air, promising further complexity with time. While already impressive in its youth, this Premier Cru has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, and potentially longer in excellent cellaring conditions.
Production
La Romanée is a prized Premier Cru climat in Chassagne-Montrachet, known for its well-exposed, sloping vineyards with limestone-rich soils over clay and marl—ideal conditions for Chardonnay of tension and depth. Domaine Morey-Coffinet farms these vines with great care, using sustainable, often organic-leaning practices to keep yields low and fruit quality high. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure meticulous selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, grapes are gently pressed and the must is settled before fermentation in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the terroir. The wine then ages on fine lees, with occasional bâtonnage depending on the vintage, before being bottled with a focus on purity, balance and longevity.
Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru shines alongside refined dishes, particularly those featuring seafood and poultry. Think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole in beurre blanc, roast chicken with morel cream sauce, or veal in delicate, wine-based sauces. It also pairs beautifully with fine cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère or a gently ripe Brie. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and tension. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a large-bowled glass to allow the wine to open and reveal its full range of fruit, floral and mineral notes.
Producer
Domaine Morey-Coffinet is a respected family estate based in Chassagne-Montrachet, born from the union of two historic Burgundian lineages: the Morey and Coffinet families. Over recent decades, the domaine has earned a strong reputation for producing precise, terroir-driven Chardonnays and characterful reds from some of the village’s top climats. Working primarily in and around Chassagne, they emphasize careful vineyard work, lower yields and thoughtful, not overbearing, use of oak to let each parcel speak clearly of its origin. Morey-Coffinet’s whites, particularly their Premier Cru bottlings like La Romanée, are increasingly recognized by critics and collectors as among the most exciting and reliable expressions of modern Chassagne-Montrachet.
