Description
The 2020 Domaine Jacques Prieur Meursault Perrières Premier Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of Meursault’s most revered vineyards. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay on a tiny 0.28-hectare parcel, it captures the tension between richness and minerality that has made Perrières legendary among collectors. In the ripe yet vividly fresh 2020 vintage, this wine marries opulence of fruit with striking precision and length.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous light green-gold color with shimmering silver highlights, hinting at its youth and energy. The nose is refined and complex, opening with bright, zesty citrus—think lemon zest and grapefruit—layered with crisp green apple and subtle white flowers. With air, more nuanced aromas emerge: cool anise, a touch of fennel, and a distinct flinty, smoky minerality typical of top Meursault Perrières.
On the palate, this is concentrated yet poised, combining a generous, mouth-filling texture with vivid, linear acidity. Citrus and green stone fruit are wrapped in a saline, chalky backbone, with finely etched spicy notes and a delicate toast from the long élevage in oak. The finish is particularly impressive—juicy, mineral and persistent, with a lingering, mouthwatering energy that seems to go on and on. While already showing beautifully with sufficient aeration, the structure and acidity suggest excellent aging potential over 8–15 years, and likely longer in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
The grapes for this Meursault Perrières come from a very small, east-facing plot of just 0.28 hectares, set on a steep slope with extremely thin topsoil (only 15–20 cm) over highly calcareous, lithographic limestone. The stony, well-drained terroir is one of the keys to the vineyard’s famed tension and minerality. Vines are hand-harvested in whole clusters into small crates to protect the fruit, then gently pressed in a pneumatic press. The must is cold settled for around 36 hours under temperature-controlled conditions before alcoholic fermentation and a lengthy 21-month maturation exclusively in oak barrels. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation, which helps to soften the acidity and add depth, while the careful élevage preserves the terroir-driven precision and mineral core.
Food & Serving
This Meursault Perrières is a superb partner for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light citrus or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole with beurre noisette, and roasted or grilled turbot. It also pairs beautifully with roasted free-range chicken, veal in a delicate cream sauce, or fine, creamy cheeses like aged Comté or mild, well-aged goat cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to allow the flinty notes and layered citrus and spice to fully unfold, especially for more serious, contemplative drinking.
