Description
From one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most coveted premiers crus, the 2020 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Craipillot is a beautifully crafted, small-production Pinot Noir of real character and depth. Produced from the domaine’s oldest vines and limited to just 2–3 barrels each year, it offers a rare glimpse into an intensely focused, old-vine expression of this famed village. This cuvée stands out for its combination of ripe, dark fruit generosity and the classic structure and longevity that have made Gevrey-Chambertin one of Burgundy’s most revered terroirs.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this premier cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour, signalling both concentration and youthful intensity. The nose is immediately expressive, almost leaping from the glass with aromas of dark berries, black cherry and ripe redcurrant, intertwined with baking spices, cocoa, and a subtle earthy minerality. Notes of sweet spice and fine dark chocolate add a seductive, gourmand dimension.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied for a red Burgundy, layered and energetic. Juicy dark cherry, blackberry and plum are framed by hints of clove, nutmeg and a touch of baking chocolate. The tannins are fine, sweet and powdery, coating the palate without harshness and giving the wine a silky yet structured profile. A line of fresh acidity keeps everything precise and mouth-watering, leading into a long, savoury finish that lingers with fruit, spice and mineral notes. This 2020 has the concentration and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
The Craipillot Premier Cru lies in Gevrey-Chambertin in the northern Côte de Nuits, an area renowned for producing some of the deepest and most structured Pinot Noirs in Burgundy. Here, well-drained limestone and clay-limestone soils, combined with a cool continental climate, give wines with both power and precision. The Pinot Noir grapes for this cuvée come from the domaine’s oldest vines, whose naturally low yields contribute to concentration and aromatic complexity. Harvesting is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the winery, the Humbert brothers favour a thoughtful, terroir-driven approach: gentle extraction to preserve finesse of tannin, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new, depending on the vintage) to add subtle spice and structure without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a wine that captures the identity of Craipillot with clarity, texture and depth.
Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Craipillot pairs beautifully with refined yet flavourful dishes: roasted duck breast with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal with morel mushrooms, or classic Burgundian fare such as coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon. It also works wonderfully with game birds, lamb racks, and earthy dishes featuring wild mushrooms or truffle. Serve at 15–17°C to highlight its aromatics and texture. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open; older vintages can be gently double-decanted shortly before service to preserve their delicate tertiary notes.
Producer
Domaine Humbert Frères is a fourth-generation family estate rooted in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin. Brothers Emmanuel (Manou) and Frédéric Humbert took over the property in 1989 and have steadily refined the style and quality of their wines, making the domaine one of the sought-after names in the village. Known for their holdings in Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin, the Humberts are celebrated for the clarity and precision with which they express their various terroirs, especially from old vines in top sites like Craipillot. Emmanuel, a passionate and meticulous vigneron, has brought renewed energy to the estate, focusing on balance, harmony and definition in the wines. Today, Domaine Humbert Frères is recognised as an important reference in the Côte de Nuits, producing characterful, ageworthy Pinot Noirs that faithfully reflect their Burgundian origins.
