Description
Domaine Faiveley’s 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a poised, deeply expressive Pinot Noir from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most characterful crus. Sitting at the southern end of the Gevrey grands crus, Latricières marries mineral precision with grand cru depth, giving a wine of power that always remains refined and vibrant. The 2020 vintage adds concentration and ripeness to this naturally cool, stony site, resulting in a Burgundy that is both thrilling in its youth and built for a long life in the cellar. As a flagship holding within Faiveley’s 10 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards, Latricières-Chambertin showcases the domaine’s hallmark clarity and elegance. The estate, founded in 1825, has been instrumental in bringing Burgundy to the world stage, with this cuvée standing as a textbook example of how great terroir and meticulous winemaking can translate into a wine of striking personality and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru shows a deep, luminous ruby hue, richer than many village wines yet still unmistakably Pinot in its translucence. Swirling reveals a dense, slow-moving texture, hinting at both concentration and fine structure.
The nose is complex and layered: dark cherry, wild raspberry and redcurrant interlace with notes of violet, rose petal and a distinctly stony, almost chalky minerality. Subtle aromas of toast, fine spice, and a touch of smoke come from judicious oak, sitting alongside hints of forest floor, dried herbs and a whisper of cocoa as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this wine is both powerful and supremely elegant. Silky, ripe tannins glide across the tongue, framing flavors of ripe red and black cherry, pomegranate and cranberry, with undertones of savory spice, black tea, and a saline, almost sea-breeze edge that is very typical of Latricières. The mid-palate shows impressive depth without heaviness, and the finish is long, lifted and precise, echoing mineral notes, florals and gentle toasty nuances.
A wine of serious aging potential, this 2020 Grand Cru will reward patience. While it can be approached after a long decant in its first decade, it is best cellared for 8–10 years and will continue to evolve gracefully for 20+ years in ideal conditions, gaining further complexity, truffle tones, and tertiary bouquet.
Production
Latricières-Chambertin is the southernmost of the grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, and Faiveley’s holding of around 1.20 hectares lies on shallow, stony soils rich in limestone, capped by a fine layer of silica. This cool, well-drained terroir, with its east–west exposure, is renowned for producing wines of striking mineral tension and floral, saline nuance rather than sheer power. The vines here, planted between 1984, 1989 and 2007, are mature enough to deliver low yields of highly concentrated fruit while retaining purity and freshness. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are kept. In the cellar, Faiveley combines modern precision with traditional Burgundian craftsmanship: careful destemming (with possible inclusion of some whole clusters depending on vintage), a gentle cold maceration, and a controlled fermentation in vat to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity rather than excessive weight. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a significant but balanced proportion of new oak—to add structure and subtle notes of toast and spice, always with the aim of preserving the distinctive Latricières character and its unmistakable mineral backbone.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir is a natural partner for refined dishes that can match its depth without overpowering its elegance. Think roasted duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal loin with wild mushrooms, or a classic Boeuf Bourguignon elevated by high-quality ingredients. Game birds, lamb saddle, and truffle-inflected cuisine pair beautifully, as do mature, not overly powerful cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère or mild, earthy cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and finesse. For young bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully unfold; older, cellared vintages should be decanted gently and briefly, mainly to remove sediment and to avoid overexposing the wine to oxygen.
Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great family-owned estates and a reference point for wines from the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise. Over seven generations, the family has built up an exceptional mosaic of holdings, including around 120 hectares of vines with an enviable share of grands crus such as Chambertin, Corton, Echezeaux, and Montrachet, as well as a wealth of premier cru parcels. Joseph Faiveley in particular helped transform the domaine into a flagship ambassador for Burgundy worldwide, a legacy that continues today. Known for a clear, elegant and terroir-driven style, Faiveley seamlessly blends modern winemaking precision with longstanding cellar traditions in their 19th-century facilities. Their Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is widely regarded as one of the purest expressions of this unique site, regularly earning acclaim from critics and underscoring the estate’s reputation as, in the words of Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve, “an estate of very high quality, representing the full glory of French winemaking art.”
