Description
From one of Burgundy’s most respected names, the 2020 Domaine Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy that captures the poise and power of this legendary terroir. Drawn from a tiny 0.50-hectare holding acquired by Faiveley in 2008, it sits beside its famed twin, Bâtard-Montrachet, yet expresses its own distinct, finely etched personality. This Grand Cru marries Faiveley’s classical, terroir-driven style with the richness and precision of a great Côte de Beaune Chardonnay in an outstanding vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is a luminous pale gold with green highlights, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose opens with pure, refreshing citrus and white stone fruits—think lemon zest, pear and white peach—layered with more complex notes of fresh brioche, acacia blossom, subtle hazelnut and a fine, chalky minerality. Gentle spice and a touch of creamy pastry round out the aromatic profile as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, this Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is at once generous and tightly controlled. A vibrant, mouthwatering acidity drives flavours of ripe orchard fruit, citrus oil and a touch of quince, wrapped in a silky, almost glycerol texture. The brioche and toasted nuances reappear, intertwined with delicate spice and a refined, saline finish that lingers with impressive length. The wine is already seductive in its youth but clearly built to evolve; with proper cellaring, it should develop additional layers of honey, nuts and truffle over the next 10–20 years, gaining even more complexity and depth.
Production
Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet lies in the heart of the Côte de Beaune’s most hallowed white wine territory, on relatively flat ground with soils rich in marl and a slightly wetter profile than neighbouring Bâtard-Montrachet. This mix fosters vigorous vegetation but also gives wines of notable finesse and aromatic lift. Faiveley farms around 0.50 hectares here, with Chardonnay vines planted between 1980 and 2018, combining mature vine depth with younger vine energy. Harvesting is carried out by hand to ensure meticulous selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Faiveley applies a careful, modern take on classic Burgundian vinification: gentle pressing, fermentation in oak barrels and élevage in a judicious proportion of new French oak, allowing the terroir’s character and the vintage’s clarity to shine without excessive wood influence. The result is a precise, ageworthy Grand Cru that faithfully mirrors its site.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Chardonnay is a natural partner for refined cuisine: think butter-poached lobster, scallops with a delicate cream or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole meunière, roasted poularde with morels, or rich poultry terrines. It also works beautifully with fine cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère or a mild, creamy Brillat-Savarin. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to preserve its freshness while allowing the bouquet to open. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter or a generous swirl in large Burgundy stems, especially in the first 5–8 years, to fully reveal their layers and complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley and elevated to international renown by his son Joseph, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great family-owned estates, with around 120 hectares of vineyards spanning many of the region’s most coveted sites. The domaine’s holdings include prestigious names such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Corton, Echezeaux and the fabled Montrachet grands crus, with approximately 10 hectares of Grand Cru and nearly 25 hectares of Premier Cru in total. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Faiveley has long been regarded as a reference for classically styled Burgundy—wines that are clear, elegant and deeply expressive of their origins. Combining 19th-century cellar traditions with thoughtful modern techniques, the estate has earned praise from leading French critics like Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve for representing the full splendour of French winemaking artistry, with each cuvée crafted as a faithful reflection of its terroir and vintage.
