Description
The 2020 Domaine Faiveley Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a commanding expression of white Burgundy from one of the region’s most respected family domaines. Drawn from a tiny holding in one of the world’s most illustrious Chardonnay vineyards, it combines Grand Cru power with the precision and elegance that define Faiveley’s house style. This is a wine for collectors and serious Burgundy lovers, with both immediate appeal and remarkable aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet shows a luminous, pale golden hue with hints of green at the rim, a tell-tale sign of its youth and concentration. The nose is at once intense and refined: lifted citrus and ripe orchard fruits mingle with warm notes of toasted hazelnuts, fresh brioche, subtle vanilla and a fine mineral edge from its stony, limestone-rich soils. A gentle, saline breeze and floral nuances add complexity as the wine opens.
On the palate, this Grand Cru is powerful yet supremely balanced. A core of ripe yellow plum, pear and lemon curd is framed by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine taut and energetic. The texture is broad and silky, with a generous mid-palate richness that never tips into heaviness, thanks to its precise structure and lingering, mineral-laced finish. The roasted hazelnut and toasty nuances suggested on the nose are echoed on the palate, integrating beautifully with the fruit and fine oak. This 2020 has outstanding aging potential; while already impressive, it will gain in complexity, depth and harmony over the next 10–20 years or more in a good cellar.
Production
Faiveley’s Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from a parcel of just 0.87 hectares on the prestigious slope shared with neighboring Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, acquired by the domaine in 2008. The ochre-colored, stone-rich clay and limestone soils, combined with the steep gradient, ensure excellent natural drainage and early ripening conditions, demanding careful vineyard management to mitigate spring frost risk. Vines planted between 1985 and 1997 are tended with meticulous attention, with yields kept low to concentrate flavor and preserve terroir character. Harvest is typically carried out by hand in small crates to protect the berries, followed by gentle pressing and fermentation in French oak barrels. Aging in carefully selected oak (with a judicious proportion of new barrels) allows the wine to develop richness and complexity while maintaining the clarity and tension that are hallmarks of Faiveley’s contemporary style.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru white Burgundy is a natural partner for luxurious, richly flavored dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a delicate cream sauce, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, or roast chicken with morel mushrooms and truffle. It also shines alongside fine aged Comté, Beaufort or other hard alpine cheeses, and can elevate simple dishes like roasted root vegetables or creamy risottos. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow both its freshness and complexity to emerge. In its youth, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to help the wine open up; with bottle age, a gentle pour from the bottle may be sufficient, taking care to preserve its delicate aromatics.
Producer
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley and elevated to international renown by his son Joseph, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s great historic estates and a benchmark for both red and white wines of the Côte d’Or. Still family-owned and operated, the domaine now farms around 120 hectares of vineyards, including prestigious holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin, Corton, Echezeaux and the grands crus of Montrachet. Faiveley is celebrated for marrying modern precision with centuries-old cellar traditions, crafting wines that faithfully reflect their origins and vintages. Widely praised by leading critics, the estate is often cited as a reference for high-quality, classical Burgundy, and its Grand Cru bottlings—such as this Bâtard-Montrachet—are sought after by collectors around the world.
