Description

The 2020 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Le Montrachet Grand Cru is a rare and highly coveted expression of one of Burgundy’s most legendary vineyards. Crafted in minute quantities, this white Burgundy captures the full power, finesse and length that have made Le Montrachet a benchmark for Chardonnay worldwide. The warm, concentrated 2020 vintage adds intensity and depth, while Comtes Lafon’s classical, low-intervention style preserves the site’s extraordinary clarity and precision. As one of the very few producers fortunate enough to own a sliver of Le Montrachet, Comtes Lafon brings decades of elite white Burgundy savoir-faire to this Grand Cru. Long regarded for their profound Meursaults, the domaine’s work in Le Montrachet is a pinnacle in their portfolio and a reference point for collectors. This is a wine of immense stature, built for those who seek the most complete and ageworthy expression of Chardonnay from Burgundy’s most hallowed ground.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Montrachet Grand Cru from Comtes Lafon presents a luminous, pale gold color with green and silver highlights, deepening slightly with air and hinting at its concentration. The nose is immediately expansive yet controlled, layering ripe citrus (lemon oil, Meyer lemon), white peach and pear with notes of acacia blossom, almond cream and fresh brioche. Subtle but unmistakable mineral tones—crushed rock, chalk and a suggestion of warm stone—interweave with hints of hazelnut, vanilla pod and a delicate, high-toned spice from the oak. On the palate, this is both powerful and precise: a full, broad attack with intense citrus and stone fruit, followed by great mid-palate density and an almost tactile, saline minerality. The texture is creamy yet tightly coiled, with vibrant acidity carrying flavors of citrus zest, ripe apple, quince, and a fine, savory undertone reminiscent of beurre noisette and sea spray. The finish is extraordinarily long and layered, unfolding over many seconds with echoes of chalk, citrus oil, and subtle toasted nuts. While wonderfully impressive in its youth, the structure, concentration and balance suggest outstanding aging potential; properly cellared, this wine can evolve beautifully for 15–25 years or longer, gaining further complexity, truffle notes and deeper nuttiness over time.

Production
Comtes Lafon’s parcel in Le Montrachet sits on the fabled mid-slope between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, where thin, well-drained limestone and marl soils, scattered with small stones, combine with ideal exposure to give remarkable ripeness and mineral tension. The vines, Chardonnay of course, are carefully tended with an emphasis on low yields and meticulous canopy management to ensure perfect grape maturity and phenolic balance. Harvest is carried out by hand, with strict sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only flawlessly healthy, optimally ripe clusters. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian methods guide the vinification. The grapes are gently pressed and the must is settled before being transferred to French oak barrels—typically with a judicious but not excessive proportion of new wood—where fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts. The wine then undergoes élevage on fine lees, often with occasional bâtonnage early in its life to build texture, before a long, measured maturation in barrel. Comtes Lafon’s aim is to frame, not mask, the voice of Le Montrachet: oak is used as a vessel for complexity and longevity rather than a dominating flavor, and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention to preserve purity and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Le Montrachet Grand Cru is a gastronomic wine, best matched with refined, richly textured dishes that can stand up to its power and complexity. Classic pairings include butter-poached lobster, seared scallops with a delicate cream or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, and roasted poultry—such as Bresse chicken or capon—with morel mushrooms and a light cream or jus. It also shines alongside luxurious dishes featuring truffles, delicate veal preparations, or aged Comté and mild, high-quality hard cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 11–13°C (52–55°F); too cold and the wine’s depth will be muted, too warm and the precision of the acidity will fade. Young bottles will benefit from careful decanting 45–60 minutes before serving to allow the bouquet to open and the palate to relax. Older, mature examples should be handled more gently—if decanted, do so briefly and just before serving—to preserve their more delicate tertiary aromatics.

Producer
Domaine des Comtes Lafon, based in Meursault, is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates, renowned for producing some of the world’s most profound and long-lived white wines. The domaine’s history dates back to the late 19th century, but it is under the stewardship of the Lafon family—particularly Dominique Lafon—that it has risen to the very top tier of Burgundian producers. Early adoption of organic and then biodynamic viticulture, strict yield control, and a relentless focus on expressing each parcel’s terroir have become the hallmarks of the estate. While Comtes Lafon’s holdings in Meursault and Volnay are legendary, their tiny foothold in Le Montrachet represents a crown jewel. In a region where every row of vines is scrutinized by collectors and critics alike, the domaine has consistently earned some of the highest accolades for purity, depth and ageworthiness. Their Le Montrachet Grand Cru is produced in extremely limited quantities and is highly sought after on the international market, cementing Comtes Lafon’s status as a reference-point producer in Burgundy and a benchmark for great Chardonnay worldwide.
