Description

The 2020 Domaine Chapuis Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a powerful and chiselled expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine terroirs. Sourced from the historic slopes of Corton-Charlemagne, this Grand Cru marries intensity, precision and elegance in a way only great Burgundy Chardonnay can. The warm, high-quality 2020 vintage brings both concentration and energy, making this a standout bottle for collectors and serious white Burgundy lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Corton-Charlemagne shows a luminous pale gold color with green highlights, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is complex and gradually unfurls with aeration: notes of ripe lemon, white peach and crisp pear blend with flinty minerality, crushed seashell, and nuances of toasted hazelnut, fresh butter and vanilla from fine oak élevage. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced by vibrant acidity. A core of citrus oils, stone fruits and orchard fruit is framed by layers of smoke, wet stone, and subtle spice. The texture is dense and creamy without ever feeling heavy, carried by a long, saline, mouthwatering finish characteristic of great Corton-Charlemagne. Still youthful in 2020, it will benefit from a few years of cellaring and has the structure to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining further complexity, truffle and honeyed notes with time.

Production
Domaine Chapuis sources its Corton-Charlemagne grapes from steep, sun-drenched slopes of the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune, where thin, limestone-rich soils over marl provide the ideal conditions for concentrated, mineral-driven Chardonnay. The vineyard’s elevation and exposure foster excellent ripeness while preserving freshness, a key to the appellation’s tension and longevity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal maturity to ensure rigorous selection in the vineyard, preserving only the healthiest bunches. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, with regular bâtonnage during élevage to build texture and complexity. The wine then matures on fine lees, allowing it to gain depth, aromatic nuance and a refined, integrated oak profile before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is a natural match for refined dishes that can mirror its richness and minerality. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a Champagne or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole meunière, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a delicate cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, Beaufort or other firm, nutty cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its precision and aromatic complexity. Young bottles (under 7–8 years) will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the bouquet to open, while older vintages should be handled more gently and may be best enjoyed after a brief double-decant.

Producer
Domaine Chapuis is a traditional Burgundy estate with deep roots in the Côte d’Or, known for crafting wines that faithfully reflect the character of their terroirs. Working with some of the region’s most prized vineyard sites, including Grand Cru plots on the Corton hill, the domaine has built a reputation for classical, ageworthy wines that balance structure with finesse. Over the years, Domaine Chapuis has become a respected name among Burgundy enthusiasts for its careful vineyard work, insistence on hand-harvesting and selective yields, and a restrained, terroir-first approach in the cellar. Its Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru stands as one of the domaine’s flagship wines, showcasing the power and mineral tension that make this hillside one of Burgundy’s most acclaimed white wine crus.
