Description
The 2020 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes is an expressive, finely etched white Burgundy from one of the village’s most revered growers. Sourced from a high, stony premier cru, it combines the generosity of the 2020 vintage with the tension and lift that make Chassagne so compelling. This is a serious, cellar‑worthy Chardonnay that still offers immediate pleasure in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous pale gold color with green highlights, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose is refined and precise, opening with lemon zest, white peach, and crisp pear, then unfolding into white flowers, chalky minerality, and subtle notes of toasted hazelnut and fresh bread dough from its time in oak.
On the palate, it is intensely focused yet textured, with a silky, almost creamsicle mid-palate carried by a firm spine of acidity. Flavors of citrus oil, ripe stone fruit, and tart apple are layered with crushed stone, wet limestone, and a gentle touch of spice and vanilla from well-judged barrel aging. The finish is long, saline, and persistent, suggesting excellent aging potential. While already approachable, this 2020 should evolve beautifully over 8–15 years, gaining complexity, hazelnut richness, and deeper honeyed notes with time in bottle.
Production
Grandes Ruchottes is a high, stony premier cru in Chassagne-Montrachet, characterized by thin, chalky limestone soils over hard rock and excellent drainage—ideal conditions for producing taut, mineral‑driven Chardonnay. Domaine Bernard Moreau works these parcels with great attention, following sustainable, low‑intervention practices in the vineyard, favoring hand work and hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is selected. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add texture and complexity without overpowering the terroir expression. The wine typically spends around a year on its lees in barrel, with minimal bâtonnage and a light touch of sulfur, before being assembled and bottled to preserve purity, tension, and the precision that defines this cuvée.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile yet refined white Burgundy that shines with elegant dishes. It pairs beautifully with butter‑poached lobster, scallops in a light citrus or beurre blanc sauce, Dover sole, turbot, and other fine white fish, as well as roast poultry with herbs, veal blanquette, and richly flavored shellfish or crab. On the cheese board, look to Comté, aged Gruyère, or mild goat cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its minerality and aromatic detail; if too cold, it will shut down. For young vintages like 2020, a light decant of 30–45 minutes in a reasonably sized white wine decanter can help the wine open up and reveal its full range of aromas and texture.
Producer
Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils is one of the benchmark estates of Chassagne-Montrachet, with roots in the village dating back to the early 19th century. Over generations, the family has patiently assembled an enviable mosaic of parcels, including top premier crus, and has built a reputation for crafting white Burgundies of clarity, depth, and impeccable balance. Bernard Moreau modernized the domaine and elevated quality, and today his sons—most notably Alex Moreau—are widely regarded as among the leading vignerons in the Côte de Beaune. Their wines are prized for their sensitive farming, restrained use of oak, and transparent expression of terroir, making this Grandes Ruchottes a standout reference for serious white Burgundy collectors and enthusiasts alike.
