Description
The 2020 Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Santenay 1er Cru Les Prarons Dessus is an expressive, finely etched red Burgundy that highlights the precision and purity this estate is known for. Crafted from Pinot Noir in one of Santenay’s choice Premier Cru sites, it marries ripe 2020 fruit with a lifted, mineral-driven backbone. This cuvée captures the growing reputation of Santenay as a source of serious, ageworthy wines that still offer excellent value within the Côte de Beaune.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Les Prarons Dessus shows a vibrant, translucent ruby color with bright garnet highlights at the rim. The nose is detailed and perfumed, offering red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry alongside more savory nuances of rose petal, crushed stone, and subtle forest floor, with a gentle touch of spice and fine oak in the background.
On the palate, this Premier Cru is medium-bodied and precise, with a silken texture framed by fresh, chalky tannins. Flavors of red berries and cherry pit are layered with hints of pomegranate, blood orange zest, and a delicate herbal note, all carried by a lively acidity that keeps the wine taut and focused. The finish is long, mineral, and mouthwatering rather than heavy, suggesting a graceful evolution over time. While already approachable in its youth with a short decant, this 2020 should develop additional complexity and secondary aromas over the next 8–12 years, rewarding cellaring through the early to mid-2030s.
Production
Les Prarons Dessus is a Premier Cru parcel in Santenay with a favorable mid- to upper-slope position, where thin, limestone-rich soils over clay and good drainage give naturally low yields and a strong mineral imprint to the wines. Domaine Bachelet-Monnot farms their vineyards with a strong respect for the environment, working the soils and favoring careful, hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Pinot Noir grapes reach the cellar. Vinification typically involves a gentle approach: partial whole-cluster use depending on vintage conditions, a cold soak or careful maceration to extract fine tannins rather than weight, and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—usually with a modest proportion of new wood—to preserve purity, finesse, and terroir expression, before being bottled with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This Santenay 1er Cru is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, herb-crusted lamb, veal chops, or classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon made with a lighter touch. It also works well with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and semi-soft cheeses like Reblochon or aged Comté. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F). A light decant of 30–45 minutes in its youth will help the aromatics open and soften the structure; as the wine ages, a gentler splash-decant just before serving is sufficient to reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is a rising-star estate in Burgundy, established in 2005 by brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet in Dézize-lès-Maranges. Drawing on family vineyard holdings and modern, detail-focused winemaking, they have quickly become one of the most respected names in the southern Côte de Beaune, with particularly strong reputations in Maranges, Santenay, and Puligny-Montrachet. The domaine is known for its fastidious vineyard work, restrained use of oak, and a style that emphasizes clarity, energy, and terroir transparency. Widely praised by international critics, Bachelet-Monnot has helped elevate the profile of appellations like Santenay, demonstrating that they can produce wines of real finesse and Premier Cru quality that stand confidently alongside more famous neighbors.
