Description
Domaine Bachelet-Monnot’s 2020 Puligny-Montrachet captures the clarity and tension that have made this village the benchmark for refined white Burgundy. From a vintage marked by low yields but outstanding quality, this Chardonnay offers a poised balance of intensity and elegance that feels both classical and vibrantly modern. It’s a serious yet approachable Puligny that delivers true premier-village character at a still-credible price point for Burgundy. In 2020, frost and hail reduced the crop across much of the Côte de Beaune, concentrating flavour and structure in the remaining grapes. Bachelet-Monnot’s hallmark is precision: carefully judged ripeness, discreet oak, and a focus on purity over power. This wine stands out for its chiselled minerality, finely woven texture, and the domaine’s meticulous approach that has quickly made them one of the most admired younger producers in Puligny and its neighbouring villages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet is a luminous pale lemon-gold with green reflections, signaling both ripeness and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive yet refined: citrus zest and lemon curd interlace with green and yellow apples, white peach, and a suggestion of pear. Subtle floral notes—hawthorn and acacia—open up with air, along with hints of crushed chalk, fresh hazelnut, and a delicate touch of vanilla and sweet spice from well-integrated oak.
On the palate, this is a textbook Puligny: medium-bodied, precise, and beautifully balanced. A core of juicy citrus and stone fruit is framed by a finely etched, saline minerality and vibrant, mouth-watering acidity. The oak influence is discreet—more about texture than flavour—adding gentle creaminess and a faint echo of brioche and spice without ever dominating the fruit. The finish is long, linear, and pure, with lingering notes of lemon oil, green apple skin, and chalky tension. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, it will gain further complexity over the next 5–8 years, and, in good cellaring conditions, can easily reward 8–10 years of aging with more tertiary nuances of honey, nuts, and savoury minerality.
Production
Puligny-Montrachet’s classic terroir—thin, stony soils rich in limestone and chalk over well-drained subsoils—gives Bachelet-Monnot’s Chardonnay both its finesse and its racy backbone. The domaine works with carefully tended vineyards, where low yields and precise canopy management help achieve perfect physiological ripeness without excessive richness. Grapes are picked by hand in small crates to preserve berry integrity and brought quickly to the cellar for gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in Burgundy barrels, with a judicious use of oak—typically including a modest proportion of new French barriques—to add depth while retaining a sense of transparency. The wine is then matured on fine lees, with subtle lees stirring as needed, before being assembled and bottled with minimal intervention to capture the purity and tension of the 2020 vintage.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet is a natural partner for refined, subtly flavoured dishes that allow its precision and minerality to shine. Classic pairings include butter-poached or grilled white fish, scallops, and langoustines, as well as roasted chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream or morel sauce, or delicate dishes featuring lobster or crab. It also pairs beautifully with fine poultry terrines, simply prepared seasonal vegetables, and aged but not overly pungent cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or mild goat’s cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F): cool enough to highlight freshness but not so cold that the aromas are muted. A light decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a bit before serving, helps the wine unfold its layers, especially in its first few years of life.
Producer
Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is one of Burgundy’s most exciting modern domaines, founded in 2005 by brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, the latest generation of a family long rooted in the Côte d’Or. Instead of following the established path within the existing family estate, they pursued formal training in viticulture and winemaking and broadened their experience with stages in other French and American regions before returning to Burgundy. Their grandfather, recognizing their vision and dedication, entrusted his parcels to them, allowing the brothers to build a domaine in their own image. Today, Bachelet-Monnot farms choice vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Maranges, and Santenay, and has earned a reputation for immaculate vineyard work, restrained but confident use of oak, and wines that are consistently praised for their precision, purity, and elegance. In a relatively short time, they have become a reference point for those seeking finely tuned, terroir-driven white and red Burgundies.
