Description

The 2020 Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru Les Fussière Blanc is a finely cut, terroir-driven white Burgundy that showcases just how exciting Maranges can be in skilled hands. From a low-yield but high-quality vintage, this Chardonnay delivers the poise and refinement usually associated with more famous Côte de Beaune villages, but at a still sensible Burgundy price. Old vines, meticulous work in the vines and cellar, and a restrained use of oak come together in a wine that’s all about balance and quiet elegance rather than power.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Maranges 1er Cru Blanc shows a pale to medium lemon-gold hue, with a bright, almost crystalline clarity that hints at its freshness. The nose opens with precise, cool-toned fruit: citrus zest, green and yellow apple, and a touch of stone fruit, layered with subtle spice, crushed chalk, and a gentle whisper of vanilla and toast from the barrique aging. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and beautifully shaped, with a rounded, silky texture carried by a vibrant, linear acidity. The fruit profile mirrors the nose – citrus, apple, and a suggestion of ripe pear – framed by fine-boned minerality and a discreet, seamlessly integrated oak presence. Nothing sticks out: fruit, alcohol, oak, and acidity feel perfectly in tune, giving a sense of effortless drinkability while retaining real depth and precision. This is delicious already in its youth, but it has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more complexity, nuttiness, and savory detail with time in bottle.

Production
Sourced from premier cru vines in Maranges bordering the famed vineyards of Santenay, Les Fussière Blanc grows on classic Côte de Beaune soils of red clay and chalk, which lend both richness and a firm mineral backbone to the wine. The vineyard is planted with old Chardonnay vines, many around or over 90 years of age, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. Harvest is carried out by hand, allowing for strict selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, approximately 70% of the bunches are destemmed while the remainder are fermented as whole clusters with indigenous yeasts, preserving aromatic complexity and a sense of place. The wine then matures in French oak barriques, with about 20% new wood, providing gentle structure and spice without overpowering the purity of the fruit or the expression of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Maranges 1er Cru Blanc is a versatile partner at the table, particularly well-suited to refined yet subtly flavored dishes. Think seared scallops, poached turbot, or oven-baked cod with beurre blanc, as well as roast chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream sauce, or mushroom and leek tart. It also pairs beautifully with semi-soft cheeses such as Comté or Tomme de Savoie. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness and precision. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or opening the bottle a little before serving, can help the wine unfurl its aromatic complexity, especially in its early years.

Producer
Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is one of the brightest names in the modern Côte d’Or, despite its relatively recent founding. The domaine was created in 2005 when brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, armed with formal training and experience from top estates in France and the US, took over parcels entrusted to them directly by their grandfather. Rather than follow the established family approach, they built their own vision from the ground up, driven by meticulous vineyard work, thoughtful experimentation, and a constant search for refinement. Today, Bachelet-Monnot is highly regarded for crafting precise, terroir-expressive wines not only from prestigious appellations such as Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, but also from often-overlooked villages like Maranges and Santenay, where they have helped redefine the potential and reputation of these southern Côte de Beaune terroirs.
