Description
2020 Daniel Twardowski Pinot Noix Arboise is a meticulously crafted German Pinot Noir that feels distinctly Burgundian in spirit, yet clearly shaped by its Mosel origins. From low-yield vines on steep slate slopes, this cuvée showcases remarkable finesse, clarity, and depth. Arboise (from the French ‘ardoise’, slate) highlights the wine’s mineral backbone, making it a standout for Pinot lovers seeking precision and elegance over sheer power.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pinot Noix Arboise shows a translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a delicate brightness that hints at its finesse. The nose is pure and finely etched: wild raspberry, red cherry, and crushed strawberry layered with rose petal, dried herbs, gentle spice, and a distinct, cool slatey minerality.
On the palate, the wine is silky and linear, with finely woven tannins and a vibrant, almost crystalline acidity. Red berry fruit is joined by cranberry, pomegranate, and subtle blood orange, framed by notes of forest floor, black tea and a touch of smoky stone. The finish is long, tense and precise, carried by the Mosel slate’s signature mineral grip. While already highly enjoyable in its youth for its aromatic lift and energy, this 2020 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Sourced from steep, slate-dominated vineyards along the Mosel, the Pinot Noix Arboise reflects a cool climate and poor, stony soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavour. Vines are tended with great attention to detail, typically with hand work on the slopes and hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are picked. In the cellar, Daniel Twardowski follows a Burgundy-inspired, low-intervention approach: gentle extraction, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and élevage in carefully selected oak barrels (often with a modest proportion of new oak) to add complexity without masking terroir. The result is a wine that is both precise and expressive, capturing the interplay of Pinot Noir and Mosel slate.
Food & Serving
This is a beautifully versatile food wine, shining with refined dishes rather than heavy, rustic fare. Pair it with roast duck breast, guinea fowl, veal tenderloin, or pork with wild mushrooms; it also works wonderfully with roast chicken, earthy risottos, and dishes featuring truffle or beetroot. On the cheese front, try it with mild to medium-intense cow’s milk cheeses or washed rind cheeses that are not too pungent. Serve at around 14–16°C to keep the freshness and lift, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth to allow the aromatics to fully open.
Producer
Daniel Twardowski is one of the key names in the modern renaissance of fine Pinot Noir in Germany, particularly in the Mosel, a region historically famed almost exclusively for Riesling. From the outset, his vision has been clear: to craft Pinot of true world-class calibre on slate, with a philosophy strongly influenced by top domaines in Burgundy. Through meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a sensitive, terroir-driven cellar approach, he has quickly gained a reputation among collectors and sommeliers for producing some of the most exciting and refined German Pinots on the market, helping to redefine what the Mosel is capable of beyond white wine.
