Description
The 2020 Dalla Valle Maya is one of Napa Valley’s modern icons – a rare, collector-worthy red that balances power with remarkable finesse. Crafted from hillside vineyards high above the Silverado Trail, this Cabernet Sauvignon–Cabernet Franc blend captures the pure, sculpted intensity that has made Dalla Valle a benchmark in Oakville. With its long aging in fine French oak and limited production, this vintage continues the estate’s legacy of producing some of California’s most sought-after wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Maya shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The first swirl releases an intricate aromatic profile: incense, clove, and fine cedar rise from the glass, followed by layers of dark cherry, blueberry, and a touch of graphite and dried violets. As it opens, delicate notes of cocoa, cigar box, and warm baking spices emerge, adding further dimension and complexity.
On the palate, Maya 2020 is both confident and elegant, with a core of ripe black and blue fruits wrapped in the estate’s signature, silk-smooth yet firmly structured tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon from Maya’s Vineyard brings depth, cassis and dark cherry, while the 40% Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift, energy, and a refined, savory tension. The mouthfeel is polished and layered, with vibrant acidity carrying flavors of blackcurrant, plum, sweet tobacco, and subtle spice into a long, persistent finish. This wine has substantial aging potential: it can be approached now with generous aeration, but will reward 10–20+ years in the cellar, gaining further nuance and harmony over time.
Production
Dalla Valle’s estate vineyards lie about 800 feet above the Silverado Trail in eastern Oakville, on steep, well-drained slopes of volcanic and rocky soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The 2020 growing season in Napa Valley began dry and relatively warm, encouraging rapid early growth, before settling into classic Napa conditions with warm days and cool evenings that preserved freshness and aromatic detail. Maturation accelerated in August, leading to an earlier-than-usual harvest, with grapes carefully hand-picked at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the fruit for Maya was rigorously hand-sorted, gently destemmed, and fermented slowly in small tanks to extract fine tannins and pure, layered fruit character. The blend—60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc—was then aged for over two years in top-quality French oak barrels, allowing the components to integrate and the wine’s signature texture, complexity, and length to fully develop.
Food & Serving
Maya 2020 is a natural match for refined, richly flavored dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary, beef tenderloin with truffle jus, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with earthy, umami-driven plates like wild mushroom ragout, grilled portobello, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and structure, decant the wine for 1.5–3 hours before serving to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften. In its prime drinking window many years from now, a shorter decant of 45–60 minutes will be sufficient to bring out its layered complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1982 by Naoko and Gustav Dalla Valle, Dalla Valle Vineyards quickly rose to the very top echelon of Napa Valley wine estates. Their vision to plant vines on the rugged eastern hillsides above Oakville was unconventional at the time, yet the combination of high-elevation exposure, poor volcanic soils, and meticulous viticulture soon yielded extraordinary results. In 1992, Dalla Valle’s Cabernet Sauvignon earned a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker, making it only the second Californian wine ever to receive such an accolade and firmly cementing the estate’s global reputation. Today, Dalla Valle is widely regarded as one of Napa’s benchmark producers for age-worthy, Bordeaux-inspired reds, with Maya standing as its flagship blend and a reference point for power, elegance, and terroir expression in the region.
