Description
Pagodes de Cos Blanc 2020 is the luminous white counterpart to the great wines of Château Cos d’Estournel, crafted from vineyards in the northern Médoc in Bordeaux. A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon, it combines tension, aromatic precision and a beautifully silky texture. Made in very limited quantities, it offers a refined expression of Bordeaux blanc from one of the region’s most historic and visionary estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pagodes de Cos Blanc shows a bright, pale straw colour with glints of green, signalling freshness and vitality. The nose is refined and expressive, opening with notes of cut lemon, lime zest and green mango, followed by orange blossom and white flowers, layered over hints of wet stone and a delicate saline breeze.
On the palate, the wine is both full and luminous, with a generous, juicy mid-palate that remains wonderfully focused. Sauvignon Blanc brings citrus, grapefruit pith and crisp orchard fruit, while Sémillon adds texture, creaminess and subtle honeyed undertones. A fine mineral line runs through the wine, finishing on a long, persistent, slightly salty finish that invites another sip. Enjoyable in its youth for its purity and vibrancy, it has the structure and balance to develop further complexity over the next 5–8 years.
Production
The vineyards for Pagodes de Cos Blanc lie in the northern Médoc, close to the Gironde estuary, benefiting from a cool, ventilated maritime microclimate that helps preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. The oldest vines are around 38 years old, deeply rooted in gravelly soils with good drainage, which naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. The estate is farmed using sustainable methods, with regular ploughing and careful canopy management to ensure optimal ripeness and healthy fruit. Grapes are harvested at ideal maturity and handled gently to protect their aromatic potential, with vinification tailored to white wine: precise pressing, cool fermentations and carefully judged maturation (often partly in oak and partly in inert vessels) to build texture and complexity while retaining a crisp, linear profile.
Food & Serving
Pagodes de Cos Blanc 2020 is a versatile gastronomic white that shines with refined but simply prepared dishes. Pair it with oysters, langoustines, grilled prawns, ceviche or delicately sauced white fish to echo its saline, mineral finish. It also works beautifully with goat’s cheese, soft cheeses, asparagus, spring vegetables, sushi and light poultry dishes with citrus or herb accents. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the floral and stone notes to emerge. A brief 20–30 minute decant in a cool environment can help the wine open and show additional aromatic nuance.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel stands majestically on the hill of Saint-Estèphe in the northern Médoc, instantly recognisable by its exotic pagodas and Oriental-inspired architecture. The estate’s story began in 1791, when Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel inherited several hectares of vines and, with a traveller’s eye for the exotic and the exceptional, created one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive châteaux. Today, under the stewardship of Michel Reybier, who acquired the property in 2000, Cos d’Estournel is renowned as one of the leading estates of Saint-Estèphe and of Bordeaux as a whole. The estate has invested heavily in innovation, sustainability and precision in both vineyard and cellar, including ambitious replanting and grafting programs, to further elevate quality. Its white wines, including Pagodes de Cos Blanc, reflect the same pursuit of beauty, balance and excellence that has made Cos d’Estournel a benchmark among the great wines of the world.
