Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pagodes de Cos shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple color, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is generous and layered, with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry intertwined with notes of graphite, cedar, violets and a subtle touch of exotic spice and cocoa—very much in the house style of Cos d’Estournel. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet refined Bordeaux with polished tannins and a supple, velvety texture. Ripe dark fruits—cassis, blackberry and dark plum—are lifted by fresh acidity, while nuances of tobacco leaf, licorice, crushed stone and finely integrated oak add complexity and length. Production
Sourced from the vineyards of Château Cos d’Estournel in Saint-Estèphe, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Pagodes de Cos benefits from an exceptional terroir of deep gravel over clay and limestone, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The proximity to the Gironde estuary helps regulate temperatures, contributing to even ripening and preserving freshness in warm vintages like 2020. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then sorted meticulously to ensure only the healthiest berries are used. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to capture color, aroma and fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new) to add structure and subtle spice, while preserving the purity of fruit and the estate’s elegant, ageworthy style.

This Saint-Estèphe red is a natural partner for classic meat dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye steak, duck breast, or braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for about 1–2 hours in its youth helps the wine open up, softening the tannins and releasing its full aromatic complexity; as it ages, a shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will suffice.
