Description
Kyrie 2020 from Clos de L'Obac is one of Priorat’s most distinctive and contemplative white wines—a serious, ageworthy bottle crafted for the true wine lover. This elegant blend of Garnatxa Blanca, Macabeu, Xarel·lo and a touch of Moscatel de Alejandria captures the wild mineral intensity of Priorat in a rich, layered white. Born from the same pioneering estate that helped put Priorat on the world map, Kyrie stands as a rare example of a Spanish white with both opulence and remarkable longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kyrie 2020 shows a deep golden hue with amber highlights, hinting at both concentration and complexity. The nose is immediately expressive and refined, with notes of fine pastry, marzipan, and honeyed nuances wrapped around soft butter tones and fresh green herbs. As it opens, subtle aromas of brioche and delicate spice emerge, underpinned by a gentle floral lift from the Moscatel.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, textural white with a glycerol richness balanced by a firm, well-defined acidity. Flavours of citrus zest, apricot and ripe pineapple unfold in layers, joined by hints of caramel, honey, cedarwood and warm brioche. The finish is long, expansive and savory-mineral, suggesting a wine that will develop beautifully in bottle. Kyrie 2020 has excellent aging potential: over the next 8–12 years it should gain even more complexity, deepening its nutty, honeyed and tertiary notes while retaining its structure.
Production
Kyrie is crafted from old-vine parcels rooted in Priorat’s emblematic llicorella—dark slate soils that lend an unmistakable mineral edge and intensity to the wines. The steep, terraced vineyards around Gratallops and the historic Mas d’En Bruno estate are farmed with meticulous care, with low yields and selective harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it to the cellar. Each grape variety is vinified separately, allowing Clos de L'Obac to fine-tune the blend: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentations and thoughtful élevage (often with some time on lees) build texture, complexity and aromatic depth without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the transparency of the terroir. The end result is a carefully assembled cuvée that respects the original Kyrie formula while reflecting the character of the vintage.
Food & Serving
Kyrie 2020 is a superb partner for rich, refined dishes: think lobster or scallops in butter sauce, roasted turbot, monkfish, or cod with a shellfish reduction. It also shines with roasted poultry, creamy veal dishes, Iberian pork, or aromatic Mediterranean cuisine featuring fennel, saffron and fresh herbs. Aged cheeses like Comté, Manchego curado or lightly blue-veined cheeses can be excellent matches as well. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to help the wine open up and reveal its full depth and complexity.
Producer
Clos de L'Obac is one of the foundational names of the modern Priorat renaissance. Officially established in 1987 by Carles Pastrana and Mariona Jarque, the project truly began in 1979 when they and a small group of friends rediscovered abandoned Garnacha and Cariñena vineyards around the tiny village of Gratallops. By replanting and carefully cultivating these historic sites—alongside international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot—they helped usher in “The New Priorat” and transformed the region from one of Catalonia’s poorest corners into a global fine-wine reference. Their first commercial vintage in 1989 had immediate international impact, and Clos de L'Obac quickly became synonymous with powerful, terroir-driven Priorat wines. The acquisition of the historic Mas d’En Bruno estate in 1991 further cemented their reputation, and today the winery is widely regarded as one of the key pioneers and quality benchmarks in Priorat, with Kyrie standing as a flagship proof of the region’s potential for profound, ageworthy white wines.
