Description

The 2020 Château Rauzan-Ségla Magnum is a benchmark Margaux from one of Bordeaux’s most storied Second Growth estates, presented here in the highly prized 1.5L format. Combining classical Left Bank structure with the sensual, floral charm that defines Margaux, this is a wine built for both serious collectors and hedonistic long-term enjoyment. The 2020 vintage has been widely acclaimed, and Rauzan-Ségla’s bottling stands out for its precision, purity of fruit and remarkable energy from start to finish.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Rauzan-Ségla shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, with the density and brightness you’d expect from a great Bordeaux vintage. The nose is finely etched and distinctly classical: aromas of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant are woven with notes of crushed stone, graphite, dried violets and rose petals, lifted by a subtle hint of orange blossom and gentle spice from its élevage in oak. On the palate, this is medium to medium-plus in body, intensely focused yet beautifully refined. The black fruit core is pure and crystal-clear, supported by very finely grained, powdery tannins that give structure without harshness. Layers of cassis, blackberry and dark cherry unfold alongside notes of pencil shavings, tobacco leaf and a subtle minerality. There is a real sense of energy and tension, with a long, precise finish that leaves floral and stony nuances lingering. In magnum format and from such a strong vintage, this Rauzan-Ségla has excellent aging potential—expect it to evolve gracefully over 20–30 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and cedar with time.

Production
Château Rauzan-Ségla lies in the heart of Margaux on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where deep gravel soils over sand and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and its classic blending partners. The estate’s parcels benefit from the mild maritime climate of the Gironde estuary, promoting slow, even ripening and preserving aromatic finesse. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, typically by hand, to allow strict selection of only the healthiest and most expressive fruit. In the cellar, vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats to capture purity and definition, followed by maturation for around 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. This élevage adds structure, subtle spice and polish without overshadowing the wine’s Margaux elegance and distinct sense of place.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Château Rauzan-Ségla Magnum is a superb partner for refined dishes built around roast or grilled meats—think herb-crusted lamb, beef ribeye, venison, or duck with a red wine reduction. It also shines with classic French cuisine such as entrecôte bordelaise, game birds, mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Given its youth and pedigree, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in the near term to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment will suffice.

Producer
Château Rauzan-Ségla traces its roots back to the 17th century, when it formed part of the highly regarded Rauzan estate before being separated into four properties in 1762. The portion that would become Rauzan-Ségla was acquired by Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségla, whose name the château still bears, and over time it earned a reputation that was cemented in 1855, when it was classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) of the Médoc. The estate, once owned by the Frey family, endured the upheavals of phylloxera and economic downturns before beginning a new chapter in 1994, when it was purchased by the Wertheimer family, owners of the luxury house Chanel. Since then, substantial investment in the vineyards and cellar has restored Rauzan-Ségla to the very top tier of Margaux, with the château regularly garnering high critical scores and recognition for its combination of classicism, finesse and ageworthy structure.
