Description

The 2020 Château Rauzan-Ségla is a polished and deeply expressive Margaux, capturing the precision and elegance that have made this Second Growth estate one of the left bank’s most coveted names. Crafted in a superb Bordeaux vintage, it marries modern finesse with the château’s centuries‑old tradition. As one of the jewels of the former Rauzan estate, now under the ownership of the Wertheimer family of Chanel, this wine represents the renewed glory of a historic property firmly back at the top of its game.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Rauzan-Ségla shows a luminous, deep ruby-purple hue that hints at both concentration and youth. The nose is refined yet intense, with layered aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, and dark cherry interwoven with violets, rose petals, graphite, cedar, and a touch of cocoa and sweet spice from careful oak aging. Subtle notes of pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, and crushed stone add classic Margaux complexity. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a silky, seamless texture and beautifully integrated tannins. The core of dark, pure fruit is lifted by vibrant acidity, giving the wine both energy and precision. Flavors of cassis, black plum, and wild berries are supported by nuances of licorice, espresso, and fine cedar, finishing long, perfumed, and graceful. While already seductive in its youth, this 2020 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining even more nuance and tertiary complexity with time in the cellar.

Production
Château Rauzan-Ségla lies in the heart of Margaux in Bordeaux, where well-drained gravel soils over sand and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The temperate maritime climate of the Gironde estuary promotes slow, even ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic detail. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimum maturity and meticulously sorted to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, with fermentation and maceration carefully managed to extract fine tannins and pure fruit rather than excess power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, to add structure, polish, and subtle spice while preserving the signature elegance and floral perfume of Margaux.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Rauzan-Ségla is a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, butter-basted beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal chops with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; as it matures, a shorter decant simply to remove sediment and awaken the bouquet will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Rauzan-Ségla traces its origins back to the 17th century, when it formed part of the renowned Rauzan estate, later divided into four separate properties in 1762. The portion that became Rauzan-Ségla was acquired by Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségla, whose name the château proudly bears to this day. Classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the estate has long been recognized as one of Margaux’s leading addresses. After periods of both prosperity and challenge—including phylloxera and economic downturns—the property entered a new era in 1994 when it was purchased by the Wertheimer family, owners of Chanel. Since then, substantial investment in the vineyards and cellar has restored Rauzan-Ségla to elite status, with the château now celebrated for producing wines that combine depth, perfume, and precision, and that stand among the most distinguished expressions of Margaux terroir.
