Description
The 2020 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Magnum is a commanding Grand Cru Classé Pauillac that marries power with grace, offering both immediate pleasure and formidable cellaring potential. Presented in a 1.5L magnum, it is crafted from a classic Left Bank blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, capturing the depth and precision of this highly acclaimed vintage. Long considered one of Bordeaux’s great “super seconds,” Pichon Comtesse has been refined further under the ownership of Champagne house Louis Roederer since 2007, bringing even more polish and detail to this historic estate’s wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pichon Comtesse shows an intense, dark red-purple hue, almost opaque at the core, signalling both concentration and youth. The nose can be reticent in its earliest years, but with air it unfurls beautifully, revealing pure, well-defined aromas of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, evolving into notes of redcurrant jelly, kirsch, and ripe bramble fruit. Subtle layers of tar, dark chocolate, leather, cardamom, ground clove, and violets emerge, with a final, refined hint of black truffle adding a luxurious, savory edge.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Pauillac of impressive precision and nuance. There is a core of finely etched black fruits wrapped in a firm yet ultra-fine tannic structure, supported by fresh, vibrant acidity. The texture is tightly woven but not austere, with mineral notes driving through the mid-palate and into a long, persistent, slightly saline and distinctly mineral finish. In magnum, the aging potential is outstanding: while it can be approached after a generous decant from around 2028, it will truly shine from 2032 onward and has the structure to evolve gracefully for three decades or more.
Production
Located in the heart of Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is rooted in classic Médoc terroir: deep gravel soils over sand and clay, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and capable of producing wines of both power and finesse. The 2020 vintage benefited from meticulous, plot-by-plot vineyard management, with grapes harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and purity of fruit. In the cellar, the lots are vinified separately, with careful extraction to maintain elegance and aromatic complexity rather than sheer weight. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, adding subtle notes of spice and structure while allowing the character of Pauillac’s gravelly terroir and the vintage to shine through.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Pichon Comtesse in magnum is an exceptional partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: classic roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison or other game, duck with blackcurrant or cherry sauce, or earthy mushroom and truffle dishes all highlight its depth and complexity. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to expand without any heat from the alcohol. Due to its youth and structure, decanting is strongly recommended: allow at least 2–3 hours in a decanter when young to open the bouquet and soften the tannins, with slightly shorter decanting times as the wine reaches maturity.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the most celebrated estates in Pauillac, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Historically associated with the Comtesse Virginie de Lalande, the château has long been renowned for producing Pauillac wines with an unusually silky, almost feminine elegance, without sacrificing the appellation’s signature power and structure. Since its acquisition by the Louis Roederer group in 2007, substantial investment in the vineyards and cellar has further elevated quality, cementing Pichon Comtesse’s reputation as a benchmark “super second” that frequently rivals – and in some vintages surpasses – the region’s First Growths in critics’ scores and collector demand.
