Description

2020 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most beloved Deuxième Grands Crus Classés, marrying power, precision and sensuality in a truly great vintage. This is a profoundly structured yet graceful wine with remarkable cellaring potential, already showing its pedigree but clearly built for the long haul. Since the estate’s acquisition by Champagne house Louis Roederer in 2007, quality has soared, and the 2020 is widely regarded as one of the most complete and refined Pichon Comtesses of recent decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pichon Comtesse shows an intense, opaque dark ruby to purple hue with a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose is initially a little shy, but with a swirl it unfurls into layers of perfectly ripe blackcurrant and cassis, redcurrant jelly, kirsch and blackberry, underpinned by notes of graphite, tar, dark chocolate, leather, cardamom, clove, violets and a subtle hint of black truffle. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a poised, almost effortless concentration. Beautifully pure black and red fruit cascades across the tongue in fine layers, framed by finessed, ultra-fine tannins and a vibrant, well-integrated acidity. Hints of cocoa, cedar, spice and crushed stone add complexity, leading into a long, mineral-driven finish that lingers with a savory, slightly saline edge. While already harmonious, the wine is clearly built for aging: it will reward patience over 15–30+ years, gaining further complexity, silkier texture and more pronounced tertiary notes with time in bottle.

Production
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande lies on the southern reaches of Pauillac, close to the Gironde estuary, on deep layers of well-draining gravel mixed with sand and clay—classic Médoc terroir that is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 is composed of approximately 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, all sourced from meticulously tended parcels and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. After careful sorting, the grapes are vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity and precision of fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a high proportion of which are new, allowing the structure to integrate and the aromatics to develop without overwhelming the natural elegance of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Pauillac shines alongside classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, duck breast, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or black truffle. It also pairs beautifully with refined game bird preparations and hard, aged cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if drinking in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the aromatics and tannins to open fully. For bottles enjoyed after extended cellaring, a gentle 1-hour decant is usually sufficient to separate sediment and let the wine express its full complexity.

Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of the most revered estates in Pauillac, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Known for producing some of the appellation’s most seductive, refined and long-lived wines, Pichon Comtesse has built a loyal following for its unique blend of Pauillac structure with almost Margaux-like finesse. Since its acquisition by the Roederer family (of Louis Roederer Champagne) in 2007, the estate has undergone extensive vineyard and cellar investments, further elevating quality. Today it stands as a reference point for left-bank Bordeaux, consistently earning top critical acclaim and featuring prominently in the cellars of serious collectors around the world.
