Description

The 2020 Château Pichon Longueville Baron is a powerful, classically styled Pauillac that captures the estate at the top of its game. Built on a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, it marries intensity and precision with a remarkable sense of refinement. Often compared in this vintage to its illustrious neighbor Château Latour, this Pichon Baron is a deeply serious, ageworthy wine that stands firmly among the elite of Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pichon Baron shows a dense, almost opaque garnet core with a youthful purple rim, signaling both concentration and long life ahead. The nose unfolds gradually with layered aromas of blackcurrant (cassis) and ripe plum, supported by notes of cigar wrapper, sweet tobacco, violets, and hints of graphite and warm earth. Subtle tones of cedar, cocoa, and spice from élevage in oak add further complexity without overshadowing the fruit. On the palate, this is full-bodied, velvety and deeply structured, with a core of dark, sappy fruit framed by fine-grained, powdery tannins. The vibrant, well-integrated acidity keeps the richness in perfect balance, giving the wine lift and energy rather than heaviness. Flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum mingle with nuances of mocha, cedar, and mineral-inflected earth, echoing long on a resonant, persistent finish. Still quite young and a little reserved, it will benefit from patience and has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25+ years, gaining even more complexity and detail.

Production
Château Pichon Longueville Baron sits on one of Pauillac’s great gravel plateaus, where deep layers of well-drained gravel over limestone and clay provide an ideal environment for Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate covers around 73 hectares, predominantly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Vineyard work is meticulous and increasingly focused on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, with careful canopy management and strict yield control to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel at peak maturity, followed by rigorous sorting of the grapes. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity and precision of fruit, after which the wine is aged in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels. The judicious use of oak allows the wine to build structure and complexity while preserving the character of the fruit and the distinctive Pauillac terroir.

Food & Serving
The 2020 Pichon Baron is a superb partner for classic, richly flavored dishes: think roast or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye steak, venison, or braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-scented dishes, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours helps the wine unfurl its aromatics and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant of about an hour will be enough to reveal its full complexity.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Baron is one of Pauillac’s most revered estates, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated across the road from Château Latour and facing its sibling property Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, it occupies some of the appellation’s finest gravel terroir. Over the past several decades, major investment in the vineyards and cellar, combined with a highly skilled technical team, has propelled Pichon Baron into the very top tier of Bordeaux, with critics regularly awarding its wines some of the highest scores in the region. Known for producing deeply colored, powerful yet impeccably balanced Pauillacs, the château has built a reputation for consistency, longevity and a style that seamlessly bridges classical structure and modern elegance.
