Description

The 2020 Réserve de la Comtesse is the celebrated second wine of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, capturing the estate’s signature elegance in a more approachable, earlier-drinking style. From a superb Bordeaux vintage, it offers the poise and polish of a grand Pauillac with refined structure and immediate charm. This cuvée is a benchmark for those who want to experience the character of Pichon Comtesse without having to wait decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Réserve de la Comtesse shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with pure blackcurrant and ripe black cherry, layered with violets, graphite, cedar shavings, and a touch of tobacco leaf, all framed by subtle sweet spice from its time in French oak. On the palate, this is a supple, medium to full-bodied Pauillac with silky tannins and a precise, fresh core of dark fruits—cassis, plum, and blackberry—balanced by notes of cocoa, pencil lead, and a hint of savory herbs. The texture is polished and harmonious, with a long, lifted finish that highlights its finesse rather than sheer power. While already enjoyable with a short decant, the 2020 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining complexity and softness over time.

Production
The fruit for Réserve de la Comtesse comes primarily from the younger vines and specific parcels of the historic Pichon Comtesse estate in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Here, deep gravel soils over clay, facing the Gironde estuary, provide excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot reach optimal ripeness while retaining freshness. In 2020, the blend is typically dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Petit Verdot, all harvested plot by plot at optimal maturity and sorted meticulously. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic intensity, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for around 12 months. This careful élevage is designed to deliver a wine with the estate’s hallmark elegance and structure, but with more approachability in its youth than the grand vin.

Food & Serving
This refined Pauillac is a natural partner for classic French dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte with béarnaise, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, veal, truffle-inflected dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. When young, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; with some bottle age, a gentle 30–45 minute decant is usually sufficient to remove any sediment and let the wine show at its best.

Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most revered estates, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Known for crafting some of the appellation’s most elegant and seductive wines, Pichon Comtesse occupies prime gravelly terroir bordering its illustrious neighbor, Château Latour. Over the centuries, and especially under modern, quality-driven ownership, the château has built a reputation for wines that combine Pauillac’s classic structure with an almost Médocienne silkiness. Réserve de la Comtesse, the estate’s second wine, has become a reference point for wine lovers seeking a more accessible yet authentically Pichon experience, offering a glimpse into the style and pedigree that have made the château one of the Left Bank’s most sought-after names.
