Description
The 2020 Château Phélan Ségur Magnum captures the power and precision of Saint-Estèphe in a particularly classic, structured style. Presented in a generous 1.5L format, it combines deep, dark fruit with cedar, tobacco and a distinctly mineral drive that recalls top Pauillac. This is a serious, ageworthy Médoc red that offers remarkable value for its pedigree and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Phélan Ségur shows a dense, opaque ruby-purple core with vibrant reflections along the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and refined, with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and cassis layered over pencil shavings, cedar wood, cigar box, graphite and a subtle ferrous, stony minerality that underscores its Saint-Estèphe origin.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with firm, well-knit tannins and a spine of fresh acidity that keeps the dark fruit—blackberries, black cherries and blackcurrants—precise and focused. Notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, roasted coffee bean and a touch of spice unfold gradually, supported by a long, persistent finish that is both savory and poised. In magnum, the wine’s structure and concentration are amplified, promising an even longer and more graceful evolution. While already impressive with a good decant, this 2020 has substantial aging potential and should develop beautifully over 12–20+ years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
Château Phélan Ségur lies on the gravelly, well-drained slopes of Saint-Estèphe in the northern Médoc, where deep Garonne gravels, clay and limestone subsoils lend both power and freshness to the wines. The vineyard is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and is farmed with meticulous plot-by-plot attention to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. Grapes are harvested by hand at peak maturity, then carefully sorted before vinification in temperature-controlled vats to preserve fruit purity and extract fine, ripe tannins. The wine is subsequently aged in French oak barrels (a portion new), where it gains aromatic complexity, structure and polish while retaining the estate’s signature Saint-Estèphe character.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Phélan Ségur Magnum is a natural partner for classic, richly flavored dishes: think roast or grilled lamb with herbs, ribeye steak, beef Wellington, braised short ribs, game birds, or venison. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Gouda or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and structure. Given the wine’s youth and concentration, decanting is strongly recommended—about 1–2 hours for immediate drinking—to allow the tannins to soften and the layered aromatics of dark fruit, cedar and tobacco to fully express themselves, especially from magnum.
Producer
Château Phélan Ségur was founded in the 19th century by Irishman Bernard Phelan, who combined several estates to create what is now one of Saint-Estèphe’s most respected properties. Over the years, the château has built a reputation for producing wines that deliver the depth and structure typical of the appellation, balanced by finesse and elegance. Long recognized among the leading Cru Bourgeois and often compared in style to classed growths from neighboring Pauillac, Phélan Ségur has invested heavily in vineyard management and cellar technology, elevating quality in recent decades. The estate is now considered a benchmark for value and consistency in Saint-Estèphe, frequently cited by critics as one of the appellation’s finest and most reliable names.
