Description
Château Petrus 2020 is a monumental Pomerol and one of the most sought‑after wines in the world, captured here in an epic, long‑lived vintage. Still almost opaque in the glass and only slowly revealing its layers, this is a wine built for decades rather than years. With perfect 100/100 scores from both Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and James Suckling, it stands as a benchmark for modern Bordeaux excellence.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Petrus 2020 shows an impenetrable purple‑black core with a tight, inky rim, hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose opens reluctantly at first, then, with generous air, unfolds into deeply layered aromas of preserved plums, blackberry compote and blueberry reduction. As it evolves, nuances of melted licorice, dark chocolate, black truffle, iron ore and warm earth emerge, followed by a lifted floral perfume of lilac, violet and rose oil.
The palate is tightly coiled, muscular and extraordinarily dense, yet equally refined. Waves of perfectly ripe black and blue fruits are interwoven with exotic herbs, graphite, truffle, cocoa and a distinctly ferrous, mineral backbone. The tannins are ultra‑fine but powerful, wrapped in a sumptuous texture that never loses precision or freshness. The finish is incredibly long and resonant, suggesting a wine that is only at the beginning of a very long life. It will need a good 8–10 years in bottle before it really starts to open, but has the structure and concentration to age gracefully through 2070 and beyond.
Production
Petrus lies on the plateau of Pomerol in Bordeaux, on a unique outcrop of deep blue clay over an iron‑rich subsoil, a terroir that gives Merlot unparalleled power, depth and longevity. The vineyard is planted almost entirely to old‑vine Merlot, meticulously tended with extremely low yields and rigorous bunch selection at harvest, all done by hand. Only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is retained. Vinification is highly precise and traditional: grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in temperature‑controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve purity and finesse. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where it develops its remarkable complexity, polish and aging capacity before bottling at the château.
Food & Serving
In its youth, Petrus 2020 is best reserved for the most refined, subtly flavoured dishes that match its depth without overpowering it: roasted lamb with wild herbs, pigeon or squab, veal sweetbreads, truffle‑accented cuisine, or simply a perfectly cooked tenderloin with jus. Mature cheeses such as aged Comté or a mild, well‑ripened Brie de Meaux can also be superb partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). For bottles opened before full maturity, decant generously—at least 3–4 hours, and up to half a day—to allow the wine to unfurl its aromatics and soften its formidable structure; older bottles should be decanted more gently and closer to serving.
Producer
Château Petrus is the undisputed icon of Pomerol and one of the most revered names in fine wine, despite its relatively modest size and understated château. Rising to fame in the mid‑20th century, particularly under the stewardship of the Moueix family, Petrus helped redefine what Merlot on the Right Bank could be, proving it could rival—and often surpass—the greatest Cabernet‑based wines of the Médoc. Its exceptional blue‑clay terroir, obsessive vineyard care and uncompromising selection have created some of the most legendary bottles in Bordeaux history. Today, Petrus remains a reference point for collectors and critics alike, with its top vintages regularly hailed among the greatest wines ever made.
