Description

The 2020 Château Pape Clément Rouge Grand Cru Classé de Graves in magnum format is a powerful, polished expression of modern Bordeaux, standing shoulder to shoulder with the region’s top estates while still offering remarkable value. Crafted from meticulously hand-destemmed berries and matured in a high proportion of new oak, it combines depth, precision, and remarkable finesse. This historic estate, whose viticultural origins date back to the 13th century and a Pope’s tenure as owner, is today widely regarded as one of the leading lights of Graves, edging ever closer to Premier Cru territory in quality and critical acclaim.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Pape Clément Rouge shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose opens slowly once given air, revealing layers of fragrant earth, crushed stones and a distinct mineral edge, followed by graphite, iron, tobacco leaf and subtle smoke. With time, the bouquet blossoms into an expressive tapestry of blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum, intertwined with rose petals, black tea, and gentle sweet spice from the oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a luxurious, velvety texture supported by firm, ultra-fine tannins. Flavours of ripe black and red berries, cassis and dark cherries unfold alongside notes of cocoa, cedar, roasted coffee, and a savory, smoky complexity that is a hallmark of top Graves. The freshness is striking, giving lift and precision to the rich fruit and carrying it through to a very long, mineral-driven finish. In magnum, this 2020 has excellent aging potential; it will reward patience, likely drinking beautifully from about 2027 and evolving gracefully for two to three decades or more.

Production
Château Pape Clément lies on the gravelly, well-drained terraces of Graves, just outside the city of Bordeaux, where deep gravels mixed with clay and sand create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2020 red is a classic 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot blend, sourced from meticulously tended vineyards and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. In a remarkable demonstration of craftsmanship, the bunches are fully destemmed by hand, berry by berry, and only perfectly intact grapes are selected for vinification. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and detail of terroir, followed by 18 months’ maturation in French oak barriques, of which around 60% are new and the remainder one year old, imparting structure, complexity and subtle spice without overwhelming the wine’s inherent elegance.

Food & Serving
This 2020 Pape Clément Rouge Magnum is a superb partner for refined, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or classic Bordeaux pairings like entrecôte with bone marrow and mushrooms. It also shines alongside game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Given its youth and intensity, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended, especially in its first decade, to allow the wine to unwind and fully reveal its layered bouquet and long, harmonious finish.

Producer
Château Pape Clément is one of Bordeaux’s oldest documented estates, with vine-growing roots that trace back to the late 1200s when it was owned by Bertrand de Goth, who later became Pope Clément V—hence the château’s name. Located in the Graves (today part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation), the estate has long been recognized as a benchmark for the region, and it holds the coveted status of Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Under the dynamic stewardship of Bernard Magrez, Pape Clément has undergone a profound qualitative renaissance, embracing meticulous vineyard management and cutting-edge cellar practices. Regularly earning top scores from leading critics and consistently ranking among the finest wines of Bordeaux, the château is now widely acknowledged as operating at near Premier Cru level in both ambition and achievement.
